Hi all,
Yesterday, I returned home after a brief outing to find 3 of my chickens gone, and one outside the fence trying to get back in.
Nothing seemed amiss or out of place, but my RIR rooster (who was so quiet), my white Silkie bantam rooster, and one of my Wyandotte hens had simply vanished...
Hi,
I'd thought the laying thing might be it, though of course I won't know for several more days, probably.
I don't usually give them treats, though, so I don't think that's it. (I would, but all of the RIRs have always been reluctant to eat from my hand. They'll do it, but only if they're...
Hi all,
I've got an RIR hen (~18 weeks, so no eggs yet) who is suddenly considerably more vocal than before.
She's always cawing about, seemingly wanting something or unhappy. She even lets herself be picked up and handled more than the others. When I bring a waterer over to her, she...
Hi,
I don't actually know how old the Cornish Rocks are; we were given them with the ducks and they already looked as they do in my little photo to the left.
My guess is that they're due for slaughtering if that's what we're going to do with them. (Mostly, the hesitation is that I don't have...
Hi all,
Recently, my roosters seem to have gone completely nuts, and are inexplicably more aggressive.
I have 2 Cornish Rocks (1 rooster, 1 hen), 6 Rhode Island Reds (1 rooster, 5 hens), and 3 baby Silkies (1 rooster, 2 hens?).
The RIRs and the Silkies share an 8 x 16 enclosure in the yard...
We also created a no-chicken/no-duck zone, and that's worked out really well for us, too.
We can enjoy the yard when we want, but the chickens and ducks can't sit around and poop up the deck/house/storage area.
Hi,
Ok. I will feed them more but try not to overdo it.
I don't think the person who gave them to me realized they were for eating, but clearly, they're not what I thought they'd be.
I'll care for them as best I can and then try to get some chickens which are clearly egg-laying and not for...
Hi all,
Based on the advice I got in this thread, I learned that i have inherited some broilers, and that broilers should only be fed twice a day (6:00 AM and 2:00 PM).
I've done this for two days now, and boy do these chickens seem unhappy about the new plan. They rush the cage door whenever...
Hi,
Yes, I'll gladly cut back on the feeding, even if these particular birds are more suited to eating than laying, if only 'cause I've got no wish to let them suffer.
How do I cut back on feeding them? How much is too much/too little?
Thanks!!
Hi,
What does it mean to feed them only at 6:00 AM and 2:00 PM?
That is, how much food do I give them? And how do I ensure they're not eating in-between those times, short of pulling the food dish back out?
Why aspirin? Do broilers normally have heart problems?
I had not intended to eat...
Hi,
I don't know how old they are, as they were gifted to me when I acquired some ducklings. They're definitely older than what I (as a novice) think of as "chicks" though. (The lady who gifted them to us said she got them from an elementary school, as none of the kids wanted to take them...
Hi all,
Does it mean anything when a chicken sits/rests with one leg splayed out to the side rather than tucked neatly under itself?
I've got photos here: Picasa Album If someone would be kind enough to take a look and tell me if this is a problem, I'd be most grateful.
Thanks!
Terence
Hi all,
I'm as green as they come.
I've spend most of my adult life working at a desk in front of a glowing box. (A nice glowing box, admittedly, but a glowing box just the same.)
Recently, I began dreaming of a more agrarian life, and when my wife's job transferred us to HI, I got my...
