Don't know if this would work for all ticks, but here's my story to add to the library. :)
I bought some 2 week old chicks by having someone else get them for me 3 hours away from where I live. A day after they arrived I discovered they had a lot of tiny black dots on their skin. Pulled one...
I know this is late to the topic, but for future reference to others looking at this thread...
For depluming mites, I apply Eprinex. The life cycle of the depluming mite is 17 days, so I reapply every 17 days for a total of 3 applications - just to be sure I've gotten them all. I do this...
My Easter Egger stops laying for long periods of time because of flock stress--even when she isn't at the bottom of the pecking order. When I remove her to a separate, safe location, she gets back into lay. Point: maybe she is feeling stressed? I would try separating her for a while and see...
I consider my eggs better for me than what I can buy at the store...as we all should...and I feed a high quality feed (all for my own selfish interest, I must admit), which gives the eggs an even better taste and nutritional quality. That said...I have a few people who want them too, so they...
I also will do more research on those specific mites. Makes perfect sense. I was suspecting mites too, but couldn't understand why the DE wouldn't have done the trick. Thank you so much for taking the time to answer, and share your knowledge! I'll keep you posted. :)
I'm also interested in what you get for an answer here. I've been having a similar problem. It started about 7-8 months ago. I have 6 chickens affected (all of them). When it started, I thought it was their first molt. But, the problem never went away.
It's like their feather fell out like...
@ mermaids: The grubs are not around anymore. They disappeared during the winter. I'm not sure if this is going to be a seasonal thing and they're going to return. We will see. It's interesting you should ask about the grubs though because just a few days ago I was watching the chickens when...
Well, I promised feedback, so here it is.
I did not inspect the other birds for lice. I just went ahead and treated them all with Sevin. I was able to get all the birds dusted and the coup and the pens as well, however, she still needed hydration and food. She was a pitiful sight and I was...
Thank you everyone, I will get to work on dusting the flock asap! I appreciate the advice very very much. I'll let you know how things progress here when there is news.
Oh Hey! I hadn't learned that "Black Star" "Red Star" stuff before.
Thanks for the safe-guard pic. You're right! It ended the confusion! LOL. That is exactly the same thing I picked up at TSC.
As for the Sevin dusting, I am also wondering if DE is of value in this situation. Would you...
YIKES! After bringing her in to my kitchen and being real up close an personal with her in an attempt to give her water with a syringe, I found small light colored bugs (lice) on her. They are crawling around her face and into her nostrils. I don't know if they are all over. I hate this idea...
My hen is still alive. She is stumbling as she tries to walk now, but at least she is still trying to get up and move a little. I can't get poop pics yet so I brought her into my kitchen. She is just sitting there...not moving a lick. Not even when I approach or the dogs.
So, back to the...
dawg53... I was unable to find the specific brand you mention (Black Star safeguard), but I was able to pick up Intervet safe-guard (goat dewormer). Is this going to work the same?
Thank you for your reply. I will try to do both.
I don't see much poop in her area to identify it...but what I have seen has been flat white-ish stuff.
She has water available, but honestly it doesn't seem that she is drinking.
She also has food available, but it appears she is...
I have a black sexlink hen that is approximately 10 months old. She was started laying eggs on 23 September. She layed 56 days straight, missed 1 day, layed 10 days, missed 1 day, layed 2 days, missed 2 days, layed 2 days, missed 1 day, layed 1 day, missed 3 days, layed 1 day, then stopped...
Much to my disliking, they are always in a run and coop. I cannot allow them out. They love to scratch the ground, but since it is bare now, that provides very little except ... if they wanted them, the grubs of course.
I doubt they are biting the chickens as they are hidden underground during the day and only surface after sundown. By then chickens are in the coop. Also doubt rotting is the issue, since they only came out last night and died for the first time. As an add on, I just noticed some of them are...
Maybe a little sign that says something to the affect of "Neighbors can be shared with, but thieves will be prosecuted!" might get their attention and help them understand that asking as a neighbor will yield better results than stealing.
MEDIUM SIZED GRUB
I live in a small city in southern Arizona and am a novice chicken owner. I have eleven chickens: 1 Americana, 1 Black Maran, 2 Buff Orpingtons, 1 RI Red, 1 White LegHorn, 1 Red Sexlink, 1 Black Sexlink, 2 Aracaunas, 1 Black Australorp. All of them were born mid-April 2014...
