I am going to let my chickens free range during the day. If they lay during the day, should I put a couple of nest boxes out in the free range area? I wouldn't want to scour the land for eggs everyday if I didn't have to.
I was wondering about runs and predators. Mainly through the top of the runs near trees. Do any predators like possums or raccoons or other critters come through the top? I am designing my run and am wondering if this has happened to anyone? So I know what to use for the top of the run, if...
Thanks for all the suggestions. I'll probably be buying from Mt. Healthy, since I can drive over there. I haven't thought about ducks, I'll have to check them out.
I won't be getting a rooster, because of neighbors. So I'll have to purchase chicks periodically. Or is it possible to get a...
I am planning on having up to 20 birds. By the 4 sq. ft. per bird, I could have up to 24.
I would like a mix of egg layers and meat birds. I have a family of 5. Would like enough egg layers to produce enough eggs to sustain us, and if extra, that is ok. The rest of the birds I would like to...
I don't even have the chickens yet. Still in the planning stages. I unfortunately won't have a rooster. Don't want the neighbors complaining, and have to get rid of them all. We don't have any Fisher cats or weasels around here. Foxes and coyotes are a possibility. The dogs are too...
I have about a half acre on my property. What I would like to do is let the chickens free range while I am at work (8am-5pm). I am worried about predators. I figure dogs and hawks would be a concern. I would fence the area with welded wire fencing. I was thinking about getting some of that...
Thanks for the info. I'll probably go to Tewes in Erlanger. It's about the same distance, maybe a little closer. They said they can do 12-15 birds while I wait.
I feel your pain, I live in a Cincinnati suburb. Our rules are even more strict. Says you can't have them unless they are 200' from the property line. My neighbors are pretty easy to get along with. I am going to put up a privacy fence, and not have any roosters. If someone complains, I'll...
I have a vegetable garden, no chickens yet. I don't plan on letting them free range. I do however want to let them out while I keep an eye on them. Are they easy to herd away from your garden to another part of your yard? Let them eat some bugs in the lawn, and then herd them back to their...
I don't have any chickens yet. I am currently planning and gathering information. My setup will be a 10' x 12' coop, and a 17' x 40' run. I have an insulated barn I can use for egg hatching. I want to have a constant supply of eggs and meat for my family of 5. I have a freezer, so I can...
Thanks Pat for the tips. I will probably end up doing welded wire. More expensive, but will give me more peace of mind. Raccoons are my biggest worry. There are plenty of them here. They usually eat out of our trash cans.
What would you recommend for venting? The roof/shingles come...
Hello,
I am a father of 3 from Milford, Ohio. You can probably get the most information about me from my Myspace.com page. Look up Vallen11 on there. I have always been into biology, and taking care of living things. I have a 300 gallon saltwater reef setup with coral and fish. I work at...
I have been reading and looking through the message board trying to learn as much as I can. Before I dive into it, I wanted get a better idea of how to design my run and coop. I want to do things right the first time.
First, the coop. I have a storage shed right now, and is the same design...
