So sorry to hear that. She's up and standing this morning. Keeping her in outta the heat today...has feed and water so see how she is after work. Gonna stop by the sporting goods store after work...bird scare rounds for the shotgun outta do the trick!
Well I did it and now feel bad...found the cockerel a good farm home and the first evening he's gone a neighbors dog attacks one of my hens. Would that have happened if the rooster was around ??? He'll have a happy barn yard life I'm sure and hopefully my hen will recover. She's mire or less...
A neighbors dog attacked one of my hens. Lots of feathers plucked and a little blood under the right wing. Shes standing on her own and has walked around a bit. Seems to be in shock right now...will let you hold her. Brought her in for the night to be more comfortable outta the heat and not be...
Thanks for the response...these are hens just old enough to start laying. Will continue to watch and work on making the nesting boxes a little more attractive to being used.
Yayyyyyyyy!!!!!! An egg two days in a row! Looks like we may have started a trend. An egg laying trend that is! Laid this egg in the grass also...so much for putting the fake eggs in the nesting boxes. Both eggs have been on the smaller side size wise...good oval shape and tan color though...
Well one of the girls has laid her (our) first egg!!! Found it in the grass of the run. I've had the fake eggs in the nesting boxes hoping they would start there. Oh well, excited anyways! We've raised these from chicks!
He's a Production Red. I'd say bought 5 months old. Bought four pullets but he surprised us. Didn't want a rooster just hens for the eggs. Just wanted some backyard chickens...now cant even enjoy the back yard! He's come after me, my wife, granddaughter and the neighbors puppy.
Well it's looking more and more like the rooster is going to have to go! He's just plain mean aggressive. If their all like this one I don't know why anyone would want to have one around. He's a Production Red...pretty one to and young. He's already pecked me twice and my wife once and just...
Just walked out in the yard to check on them...he trotted across a ways stopped beside me, paused then nailed me on top of the foot. Young birds, Production Reds that haven't even started laying yet. Maybe he's just asserting his dominance.
Well first I put half a watermelon in the coop...thought they might like to peck on it. Then I put a pile of dirt...thought they might take a dust bath. They act like they're terrified of each...nothing to do with either. Any thoughts?
Don't want/need anymore critters right now. My coop/run are attached and it is portable so I do move it around. The rain and humidity haven't helped lately. Gonna try some fly attractant traps and see if they help.
After buying our first chicks at TSC and rearing them in the sunroom until feathered out and I got the coop and run built we've had them staying outside for a while now. That first night when I last checked on them they were chirping away as they wanted to come inside. I must admit I was nervous...
