Silver Laced Wyandotte (roo) + Black Australorp (hen) =

I have crossed a ba roo with a slw hen snd ended up with a roo that looks like dad but with a rose comb. At 14 weeks old he started to change color on his head and neck to a light brown and then white, so he has some of his mom in his colors - lets see what he will look like when he gets older...

    90 gram egg!

90 is nothing compared to our BA's eggs. We have had 98, 116 and today 117 gram eggs. They normally lay large to extra large ranging from 59-71 grams. These are 3 we have got in 3 weeks. I believe it was from Jersey (our Black Jersey giant). I have broken all of them except the one I got...

    Winterizing Chickens

Chickens know when to go out in the cold and when to stay in. I have BA's and SLW's. If you have chickens that have a straight comb you need to make sure to take Vaseline and rub their combs with a small layer to coat so they do not get frost bite. Most of the time you want to keep your coops...

Where to put the food & water with Free Range Chickens??

No don't leave it outside at night. Hang it outside during the day and bring it in at night. Your chickens do not need to have it inside the coop. When you let them out in the morning, bring the food out to and hang it. But it would probably be a good idea to try and hang it outside where the...

    Nesting boxes...Inside or Outside???

The lighting is not really a concern for you could put a small light in the coop. We have one of those extension cord lights that you use for maintenance on a car. That you hook to the hood, and a wire cage around the light so it doesn't break. We hooked it up to the roof of the coop in the...

    Nesting Boxes inside or outside?

I have inside nesting boxes. We wanted a way to make it easy to clean, feed and water, and collect the eggs daily. Our coop looks like a big dog house. The 2 sides fold down for easy access to clean, remove the nesting boxes, etc. The nesting boxes we have looks like a small bookshelf the...

    Nesting boxes...Inside or Outside???

I have never tried to do exterior nesting boxes. Our coop has a fold down sides so it has easy cleaning and nesting boxes like a small bookshelf on its side. We cut small round holes in the back so we can fold down the door and reach in the holes from the back and grab the eggs without going...

When do roosters start to crow?

My Rocky the rooster started crowing at 8 1/2 weeks. He only seems to try when we let them out into the run in the mornings. No other time. 3 tries and he is done. Lol.

What age to let chicks free range?

I have 15 new baby hens and 1 baby roo. Can I let them out when they're 9 week's old with the older 1 1/2 yr old hens to free range? Will they go back to their coop or maybe go to the older ones coop?

    Building the ideal chicken run

I too am new to the whole chicken raising thing. I live in Ohio and our Chicken run was like what your first one did. We placed metal stakes in the corners and one in the center of each side, hooked the fencing to it and left it a little wobbly as well. The reason for this is that if anything...
