Thanks for this post, we just found an old commercial chicken shed that has abandoned wall-mounted nesting boxes. We're meeting with the owner to negotiate buying a few so we can start making this chicken house too! It's just what we were looking for, a Joel Salatin type Egg-mobile. THANKS again...

Help! Eggs due to hatch in 3 days, and I found a dead chick today.

The same thing happened to me. I just assumed that somehow the egg was cracked and or pecked. I removed the egg pieces and the chick and just let her go back to sitting. The chicks that did hatch, hatched normally about a week later. I don't know what happened, but I'm guessing she stepped on it...

Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

Sorry I didn't get back here for over a week! We have 5 baby chicks and I'm so excited about it! Even though they're mixed breed, BCM and Wheaten Marans (roo) and they'll just (hopefully) be egg layers, we're super happy! I didn't mean to let her go broody, and I didn't expect anything, although...

Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

Well, we're down to 10 eggs. I went to give her more water and found a broken, stinky egg, which I threw away, and then realized there was a dead chick at the edge of the nest, and an empty egg. Then another egg on the edge of the nest, which was cold and when I broke it open, the chick was dead...

Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

I have left them entirely alone since we candled. I am anxious, but since it was an accidental brood, I won't be devastated if we get nothing from it. BUT if we get a few chicks I'll be excited! At least 3-4 of them had movement that we could see... so we'll just wait. I would have taken out 3...

Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

So... I could really use some help/advice from those who have hatched BCM eggs before. We have 13 eggs. We candled them all today, which, from previous candling, we're guessing is day 20 or 21. The eggs are solid black. They're virtually un-see-throu-able, except for the air sac. They all still...

    Michigan Hatchers! What'cha got cookin?

Hi All This is our first time hatching and it's all by accident! We couldn't find the laying place for our BCM because we hadn't gotten our tractor yet and the grass was too tall! By the time I found her, the eggs were well on their way, so I've just let her have at it. But, being human, I'm...

Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

Wow, that was awesome information! Thank you for taking the time to write it all out! I learned a lot. We decided to put a bottomless coop right over the grassy area she chose for her brood. We had the option, and it seemed the easiest not to disturb her. It is one of the more odd things I've...

Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

Thank you! I just read that even though eggs may be laid over a course of a week or 10 days or so, that they all start incubating when the hen goes broody on them, so that they hatch all together. I think, based on our predators, that I will move her and hope for the best. She is familiar with...

Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

Hi I'm new here. Our hen just went broody a bit ago. I candled and found live chicks that are at least 10-11 days old. My questions are 1. can I move the hen and eggs to another location without her freaking out? and 2. will the eggs hatch on different days, since they were all layed...
