I let my girls out for some sun and to stretch their legs this afternoon. I looked out the window and was horrified to see a hawk on one of my hens. I opened the door and yelled (get em) to my dog. She bolted acroos the yard and chased the hawk off the hen. The poor hen was bleeding profusely...
I have had a broody hen hatch chicks the last 5 springs. Every year I worry and do less. They do have it under control. One thing that has worked well for me is placing a wood pallet in the coop and one in the run. it provides an instant hiding place and protection for chicks from adult birds.
My Jack Russell has followed my hen and her new chicks around the yard for two days now. She has always been great with my chickens strangely. She chases and kills everything else.
I let her call all the shots from sitting on her eggs in the main coop to hatching her chick's with all the other hens and rooster with her. Everyone is getting along great and after only three days they are all cruising around the yard behind mom with my chick loving Jack Russell in tow.
Well she hatched 11 chicks. One died and two eggs look fully developed but dead. So I guess 10 for thirteen is pretty good. The chicks are doing well and so cute.
Jen maybe it was the over night hour that you didn't get a reply. I would love to help but I'm kind of new to this chicken stuff. I'm sure you'll get some good answers soon and good luck.
About half my chicks have hatched in the coop yesterday. They are under mom in a nesting box on the floor. My other hens and rooster seem to be going about business as usual and not even phased by the new arrivals. I have been closely watching everyone for bad behavior and been prepared to...
I'm so proud of my hen she has been sitting for three weeks and today we have had at least four chicks hatch. Tomorrow should be fun with 9 eggs still under her.[/IMG][/IMG]
Well it seemed like forever but my wife just called me. She hears peeping coming from under our Rhode Island Red hen. I can't wait to get home from work. The timing is great, I have the next three days off to enjoy this. She is on 13 eggs and all looked good last week with the exception of one...
Yes you can eat them. They may be a fertile egg but nothing starts to develop until a broody hen has begun to sit on them or you put them in an incubator. Enjoy your eggs.
I have a shallow running stream through my yard. My chickens are always standing in it and drinking from it when its hot. I was thinking of a solar powered fan for the coop too.
