    When to cull old hens??

When I got started, I got a momma and three chicks. Out of the chicks there was one hen and two cockerels. I culled the to cockerels shortly after they started crowing. In my particular area, the neighbors will put up with a dog that yaps all night because we have to. On the other hand...

Cheap hatching eggs to fill out my flock?

I know there are breed purists out there but for longevity and heartyness, I've stuck with mutts from local sources. My girls are completely acclimatized for the area and are great summer time layers. The black hen in my profile pic was from a flock of feral chickens that lived in my parents...

    TINY EGG!!!

Well this was a shocker. After chasing my broody girl off the nest, I was very surprised to see one normal egg and this little thing. I had to look around to see if a quail had snuck into the coop. My girls are all mutts and lay small eggs in the first place but nobody complains about the...

    Okra??

My mutts love okra. I use garden shears and cut it up into half inch slices for them. Since I give them the okra that got too big to cook they only get the first half that's still tender. They also love the reject yellow tomatoes. It's either the chickens or the compost heap and they are so...

Here's my chicks. No idea as to the breed. They are a mash up of various breeds that my folks and their neighbors have had end up in their backyard. Somewhere along the line, some game hen got into the mix too. Up shot of the funky breeding is they are great foragers and produce an egg a...

    Corn on the cob?

Momma and the little ones love fresh corn on the cob. I have corn in the garden that has gotten too starchy and normally I'd let it dry and grind it but the birds are loving it too much. The four of them can strip a cob in 20 minutes.

Black Australorop-- is this a rooster?

I'm told that my hen is probably a Black Australorp mix. It's good to hear everyone say that they have a good disposition so maybe the chicks will not be as nutty as their mom (was wild free ranging). She is a very good mom though, very devoted to her chicks. BTW - My two cents worth, your...
