I can’t wait for spring! My hens love it when the garden is in full swing because they know I’ll be giving them treats and scraps. I definitely miss warm weather haha
Here’s a pic of my little girl getting her treats. She’s getting stronger and we have started giving her feed with plenty of vitamins and nutrients. She does seem to have a mild case of vent gleat that we’re going to start treatment on. Other than that I think she’s going to be okay!!! Thanks to...
Well my sister and I removed the egg, but the egg was so massive that it would have practically turned her inside out to lay it. We were forced to break and remove the egg slowly and carefully. When we got the behemoth egg out she seemed so relieved. She’s recovering now in a soft towel nest in...
from the picture it appears she may have some mild frostbite. Vaseline is definitely a good choice. I would probably watch her over the next few days and try to keep her warm.
I’d have to see a pic for sure but a chicken with a large comb or waddle is more at risk than others. Usually when I’ve seen frostbite it’s been black spots on the tips of combs.
Purple combs usually mean something is wrong with the respiratory system. Is her breathing loud or strained?
I’ve dealt with a few cases of this. I had a golden comet who didn’t seem to be picked on but refused to sleep with the other roosting hens. She didn’t lay eggs and had always been the runt. One day her comb began growing and she finally asserted herself and earned a place on the roost. But she...
I’ve got two chicken coops that were built to be cool in the summer and warm through the winter, but it has been so cold (dropping to single digits) I’ve had to put a heat lamp in each coop. It’s been an unusually cold winter...
Yes it did have epsom salt, and I don’t know the last time she pooped... I was giving the flock their morning treats and happened to see her walking funny. When I picked her up I immediately noticed the blood and tip of the egg poking through her vent. I’m getting desperate because she’s getting...
You’ve definitely done the right thing. I have a red tailed hawk that has attacked my birds before. I had a duck that received some puncture wounds and we separated her and applied neosporin to the wound. Since the wound is small I would just watch it and keep it clean. As for the hawk, he will...
My sister and I have been raising chickens for years and have just recently become breeders of silkie chickens. I have dealt with egg binding before but this is a little different.
I have a young hen who is trying to lay her first egg, unfortunately the egg is larger than the average first egg...
She was acting very funny today and she was very quiet. I followed her around to make sure she was alright when she started to lay her first egg. I thought after that she would be fine but it's been about twenty minutes she is now posturing like she's about to lay another one. Her first egg was...
I'm new to raising ducks but I have been raising chickens for quite some time. I got three chicks from tractor supply (they don't tell you the gender). Two of my khaki campbells are males and one is female. They were all fine until they reached adulthood. One of my males had a yellow bill and...
