    Covid-panic-induced chicken keeping?

My flock aged out late last summer and we were very busy through fall, so I have only two hens now after raising them for 10+ years. Just our luck this year hens are hard to find, so when I heard about so many starting to raise them, I told my wife that in two or three months there will be lots...

Do people lie about how many eggs they get??

There have been 2-3 bad winters in the last 10, when my flock of RI reds were at their peak age when I got nearly 100% most days. I would guess on average for the 10 or so years I've had hens, I got 50% or so. I feed them a layer mix from a local feed plant and scraps from our garden and table.

    Transparent coop walls?

Those were my concerns too. As far as beauty goes, my thought now is a clear panel or two mixed with the metal panels for the roof to act as sky lights. This little project is beginning to feel like a home remodel.

    Transparent coop walls?

I'm in SW Ohio, greater Dayton. My coop is shaded by oaks and other trees on all sides but east. If I go with OSB, the walls will be painted or stained where exposed. There will be an 8" overhang on all sides with a metal roof. I'm leaning toward the east being transparent to catch the...

    Transparent coop walls?

I have plans to triple my coop area. It is off the ground and I have both OSB and transparent fiberglass panels I can use for the walls, all four or just one. Are there reasons for or against see through walls? I even thought about making the roof transparent but I don't want it to be like a...

    Winter pullets?

I realized I should have included my location after the original post. I'm in southwest Ohio, greater Dayton area, zone 6A. At this point I've arranged for a dozen Australorpe pullets in May, after I add on to the existing coop. My run is comprised of three 10'X10' chain link dog runs and a...

    Winter pullets?

I've had hens for about 10 years now, mostly for our own egg source. I've had as many as 25 at one time, but as life has happened, right now my flock has aged out and I'm down to two which lay when they feel like it. I found a guy with month old pullets for sale for a fair price, but it's the...

New England - Metal roof or no?

Condensation is generally only an issue when there is a significant temperature differential from one side to the other. A proper chicken coop requires lots of ventilation and usually no heat, therefore even with a bare metal roof or sidewalls condensation should be negligible.

    Feed sack recycling ideas??

Yes, I stuff them with used grocery bags and use them for archery targets. They cost nothing and are pretty durable. Easy pull too.

    Raccoon visiting to steal feed

I tolerate skunks and opossums because I can scare them away and they usually don't come back, at least that I see. I don't tolerate raccoons; they may start harmlessly enough, but for them, killing chickens is an inborn addiction they can't stop. I have lost hens to hawks and owls once in a...

    Water Nipples.. help?

Flyawayca has done it correctly. A bulkhead fitting is needed for the pail, and cleaner/primer is necessary before the cement to properly seal the PVC. The nipples are more than likely 1/8" NPT, so if the holes are drilled and tapped the right diameter, thread sealant should be used-either...
