Thanks, all! SO AM I!
Luckysaygo - thanks for the heads up. I was thinking today that it is actually probably easier for the hawks to get them in this kind of environment!! Will have to only let them out when we are there. They are still in a brooder, and I feel bad for the babies . . . I feel...
I FOUND THE CHICKEN!!! I heard it peeping loudly and followed the sound. It was INSIDE my neighbor's bar on her back deck!! On the top shelf next to a cooler! Guess it was a top shelf chicken! ;)
HOORAY!
I left our dozen 6-week-old chicks outside for 5 minutes while I was Googling, "can you leave 6-w-o chicks alone outside?" !!!
Came back to 11. No sign of where it might be. Not a feather. Nothing.
What might have a happened? A hawk?
We live in a residential area with houses all around us...
Thanks for the hellos and great info, everyone!
We ended up with 7 lavender orpington chicks, 3 wheaton ameraucanas, and 2 that are either Easter eggers or olive eggers. Some of the orpingtons seem like they like to be held already!!

My husband and I started building a coop for a small flock of chickens (5-6). Originally, we intended to raise them all from chicks. However, not as many hatched as expected and we weren't able to get any of our chicks this time around. The person who is hatching them has another dozen due to...
Hi, all. My husband, two kids, and two cocker spaniels live in upstate NY. (FAR away from the city.)
We want to start raising backyard chickens and are trying to hammer out the details.
We thought we'd missed the boat for this year, until a friend recently announced she has some lavender...
Hi there. My husband and I want to raise backyard chickens. We were researching building coops and had an idea but aren't sure if it will work.
We have a 10.5' x 20' shed that is currently being used as a playhouse for our kids. (It is about 6' tall). The kids are little and don't use it much...
