    Normal cere....?

I bet it's my feeder. It's a rabbit feeder with 1/2" hardware cloth kinda over the opening so they don't flip out the food all over. It's probably from pecking through the wire. I recently got a different brand of food that is more powdery and doesn't move through the feeder like the...

    Normal cere....?

If it is contagious it could have only came from wild birds. That's why I'm trying to figure out if it's a problem. I have no other chickens or anything. I have not gotten any more quail either. Just the original batch I hatched and the quail I have hatched from those. No new birds other...

    Normal cere....?

They are acting normal. The white hen is a year old. She was pecked pretty good by a rooster about a month ago. I thought that's what it was from. Now the young 6 week old rooster I added with them has the same thing happening. It could be pecked, not sure. All I have are 15 coturnix. No...

What temps do Japanese Quail like?

My coturnix are outside year round. It can get -15 degrees Fahrenheit in the winter and 100 degrees Fahrenheit in the summer. I put lights on them in the winter and they lay through winter, at least half of them depending on the temp. A couple even laid eggs in the -15 F temps. Only about...

    Help...White Softwood Shavings (Stallion Bedding).

I found that puppy piddle pads work awesome the first week. More absorbent than paper towels and easier to change. I just get the large ones so it only takes one to line the bottom on the brooder. I discovered using them by accident when I ran out of paper towels and it was all I had to use (...

    Messy Eaters

I cut a piece of 1/2" hardware cloth to fit between the two pieces of the base of the feeder. It helps a lot with waste. I also found if I continue to grind their food until they are 3 weeks or so they don't through so much out either.

Does anyone know why this grouse is so friendly?

We had a grouse in the mountains here that would run at your atv tires and attack them. You had to drive super slow to get by it with out running it over. it was in the same spot for two years then vanished. Funny little thing, my dad even caught it and gently tossed it off the trail once...

    Does anyone sell feathers?

I do a lot of crafts with feathers. I have a macaw and an Amazon parrot along with my coturnix quail that I use their molted feathers for various crafts. I wash them with dish soap to clean them. I had some chukar feathers but can't find them. I would love to buy some bulk chukar and pheasant...

My Coturnix wont lay any eggs :(

Mine took about 3 weeks before they started to lay after I put lights up last fall. I slowly got a few more eggs very 3 or 4 days once they started. At most I get about 8-10 eggs from 13 hens. The weather was in the teens and negative temps for a while though so I think that was pretty good...

    Quail egg cartons

Someone should start making pulp cartons again.... I hate paying $1 for every egg carton. I put stickers on mine asking people to save the cartons but I find it unlikely to get many back.

    Quail egg cartons

I got these cartons from ebay. A little pricy with shipping but the eggs fit at least. I have only had one big round double yolker that didn't fit so far. They are really sturdy too. Those other cartons were super flimsly too.

    Outdoor Brooding

Thanks for the reply. I'm still deciding if I want to deal with the extra work of hatching early. I have to keep them in my extra bathroom and they get stinky after a while. I wish I had a shed or something with power to brood them outside in. I never use a heat lamp on my other birds. They...
