I have kept a flock since 2012 and DE has always been my go to for parasites. Just make sure you get the food grade kind not the one for pools. I get it at tractor supply. It is harmless to people. i don’t know if mites were bad this past year or because of the wild birds but I am currently...
My hens all use one box 90% of the time, when they decide to lay :hmm:hmm:hmm they are a bunch of followers, if you give them anything new to eat or drink I always watch to see who the first one to be bold enough to step up is and then the rest follow.
Maybe my hens are just old. Having similar problems. I have many different ages. But my two 8 year olds still lay off and on. I dont know how many predators are in your area but when hawks start flying over head and screaming every hen and duck I have run for shelter and their will be no eggs...
Since about July of 2021 my 8 hens have barely been laying. I have two 8 year olds that miraculously still lay off and on (Easter Eggers). I have a Brama that just wants to eat and probably hasn’t layed in a year she’s about 5. Then i have two more 4 year olds that are sporadic. Then I have a...
I have ducks and chickens, the duck eggs seem to always mud or something on them They do love water and mud. So I do wash the ones that are going in the skelter (swivel thing that holds eggs) So I apply the float or sink egg method. Get a bowl of water put the egg in it and if it floats its...
I had 6 baby chicks and after one week one died, it was very odd, after a couple phone calls and some detective work we assumed the baby had cocci. I treated the remaining 5 for a week with Corid and I also added some Diaotomaus Earth to their sand and I am happy to report they are all doing...
Hey could use some advice, just had a 10 day old chick pass with no sign of any problem before. Should I go ahead and treat the rest for Coccidiosis? I have raised many flocks and this has never happened. I’m baffled. Please help. Do I just ask for Corid? Is that what I put in the water?
I am not new to ducks or chickens but this is baffling me. May of 2020 I got 3 new female ducklings. They are 7 months old and no one has layed an egg yet. It is winter here in Michigan so is that it? I have 2 Peking and 1 Ancona. These are the only breeds I have ever kept and none layed in the...
Thank you Glenda Haywood for the great article on nutrition for my hens. I had no idea sunflower seeds were so beneficial. I have had three hen drop dead in the past four months. Two of them over four years old but one Road Island Red was only a year old. So was checking in to what I am feeding...
Cmon, thanks for the photo. I lost my old male Ancona duck last night. The babies were locked in the house ,but he was out in the pen. The fence is 5-6 feet high. I found some feathers and a little bit of blood. My guess is an owl. I found no body or any other parts. I dont think a little fox...
Hello Ibgreenfield, sounds like you have a lot on your plate especially with working FT from home and the animals. We run a rescue ranch and currently have 9 hens and a young rescue dog of 2 who was born here at the ranch. We must keep our hens locked up because our predators are many. Two of my...
Currently I have 11 hens. 2 of my hens are about 6 years old and still going strong have out foxed a fox and escaped raccoon attacks they are our chickens with 9 lives. I always start with babies I love raising them.
Thank you for the input I've been trying to figure out when to reunite our mama and now two six week old babies with our other drake and female. I think I'll wait a little longer. We were allowing our group be fore babies to go to the small pond behind the horses stable, they were adorable to...
we have cared for many newborn chicks in a brooder. We have incubated and hatched ducks in a brooder. But one of our female ducks went broody and we have her and two new babies since yesterday. I separated the other ducks from her, but do I just provide food and water in their little house just...
I eat duck egg for breakfast very often. Love them fried over easy with toast, very creamy yolk. Also best for baking. I wash the dirty ones when I gather them or within a few days. Never had a problem.
There may be something by the pond or in it that's making them stay back. Mine head for the shade in the heat of the day. They used to go to our little pond until we had a fox attack. Now they have to stay in a fenced area with a pool.
