Saga of the Broody Hen and New Chicks

I'm pretty excited about our adventure with our chickens today so wanted to share. I have been a long time lurker and learned so much on this forum! We got 5 chicks three years ago. In the past several months, we lost two -- one to a predator, and one to illness. Of the remaining hens, two...

    Rogue hen!

Thanks, I will try the float test. With the amount of snow we had, I am pretty sure the hen hasn't been going over to the neighbor's for more than a week and half or so. I've noticed one chicken recently wandering around over there and sometimes ending up in our front yard where I would...

First COLD winter with chickens, no heat, perfect!!

This was my first winter with chickens, and I also have an unheated coop. We had some extremely cold weather, plus a crazy amount of snow. While the chickens were clearly displeased with the weather, especially the snow, they actually kept laying all winter. From the five hens, I usually had...

    Rogue hen!

My neighbor called me today to say one of my hens has been hanging around her porch steps lately and may be leaving eggs there. I went to take a peek, and sure enough there were 8 eggs in hidden in a spot just under the porch steps. The hen isn't broody, she just decided she likes that place...

How Many Eggs Did You Get Today?

3 eggs from 5 hens, working our way back up from only 1 egg a day. This is our first year with hens, and by fall we had 3 eggs a day. Then we had a sick hen, a possum attack, some harassment from a hawk, and a rambunctious labradoodle chasing the girls. We were down to 1 egg a day, then went...

    Hen walks funny, seems weak?

Good news -- although we never figured out what was wrong with her, our limping chicken is no longer limping. A few weeks ago, she started to seem to be moving around better. Now, she runs around as well as the others. In fact, I can't even tell which one was the limper! I wish I could say I...

    Hen walks funny, seems weak?

Just wanted to give a quick update -- our limping hen is still limping around. She is on vitamins but hasn't gotten any better or worse. She still gets around OK and is eating and laying, but no change in her legs. The only good thing is now we can easily tell her apart from the other hens.

    Hen walks funny, seems weak?

Thanks, I will keep it in mind. I don't have any vitamins in the house, but I'll look for those if the feed stores don't have the right kind.

    Hen walks funny, seems weak?

Thank you for looking at the video and photos. I will call around to feed stores tomorrow to make sure we get the right vitamins and will watch her for any other symptoms. I really appreciate the help!

    Hen walks funny, seems weak?

Yes, they were vaccinated for Marek's. I will pick up some vitamins tomorrow to add to their water. I can't see any signs of swelling; it's really strange! Here's a video of how the hen is walking: And, here are some pictures of her feet and legs. I look forward to reading more of your...

    Hen walks funny, seems weak?

I should be able to post photos tomorrow when I'll have someone here to help hold her. I'll even see if I can post a video on YouTube and link it here to show how she walks. Thanks for the suggestion!

    Hen walks funny, seems weak?

Thanks for the suggestions! I closely examined the hen's feet again and she shows no signs of any injury or bumblefoot. Her toes all look normal and straight and when I touch her feet and legs, she doesn't seem to be in pain.

    Hen walks funny, seems weak?

Hello! I am concerned with one of my 5 hens. She's a 6 month old black sex link. For the past few days, she has been walking funny, almost like a limp. She doesn't run across the yard like crazy anymore when I come outside with treats, but will just walk in her new ungainly way. Today she...

    New Chickens and Free Ranging

Thanks for the response. They weren't sleeping in the coop, just penned next to it during the day. The crate wouldn't fit in the coop, so I brought it inside at night. I decided to keep the new chickens in the run during the day for the next several days, giving the big girls their own food...

    Hi!

Hello, my name is Alli and I am new to this forum. New to chickens, actually, with our first flock not even old enough for laying yet! I have four black sex link hens and one pretty brown mix of something. We live in Connecticut. Browsing this site was a big help in raising our first...

    New Chickens and Free Ranging

This spring we got our first little flock of four hens, only to find out that one was actually a rooster. We returned him to the farm where we got him and swapped him for two, slightly younger, pullets. Our older hens are about 3 1/2 months old, the younger two about ten weeks old. We...
