That makes sense, thank you.
The funny thing is that she actually does have a lower roost available that is also perfectly suitable for sleeping in, and can be reached by jumping instead of flying, but she has never used it. I will try to put her in the lower roost myself, in case that will make...
For about a week, my hen, which is at least seven years old, has stopped leaving its roost by itself for (I think) all but one day. This has meant that I have had to enter its hutch and remove the hen from its roost by myself. And after I do, the hen often produces a dropping which is really big...
Today I received a five-month-old Maine Coon cat that was 'finally' able to be flown to me from its breeder in the South Island because of the Level 3 lockdown ending. I didn't realise how stupid of an idea it was until I actually received the cat, and I regret buying it, but at this stage it is...
She's still alive and is still eating. She was supposed to see the vet on Wednesday, but the appointment got cancelled because of the lockdown. I don't know whether any vets are still open near where I live, but the hen doesn't appear to be unwell for the time being. Hopefully my fish mox will...
The results for the blood test came back not long ago; they were normal.
I cleaned the hen's hutch, and I'm glad that I did, because I discovered a big hole in the wire on the floor of the hutch. I have covered the hole with a brick for the time being.
The hen is still eating and I think that...
I recently took this hen to the vet again. The vet observed that the hen has lost more weight. While the vet was taking blood samples from the hen, the vet found that the hen has a lump in its oesophagus that is probably causing it pain. So, the vet said to not tube-feed the hen any more and to...
I should have been more succinct. I was able to easily tube-feed my hen the Harrison's Recovery Formula because it is just a powder added to water, but I am unable to do the same for blended pellets because they usually cause syringes to get jammed, and they can't go through a tube at all.
I did...
The only good news, which I was actually told a while ago now, is that the calcified mass in her oviduct is seemingly gone now.
She still eats little in the morning and almost nothing in the evening. I was tube-feeding her with Harrison's Recovery Formula, but I ran out of it, so now I am...
The vet's necropsy found that the hen had a deep infection that went right down to the tendon on a part of its leg. It was probably caused by trauma. The hen also had a small screw in its stomach, but that was unrelated to the hen's illness.
Unfortunately, this hen had to be put to sleep today. The two vets who had been seeing this hen agreed that it was the best option for her at this stage. The hard, dry, black lump on her leg wasn't going away, and surgery was unlikely to help.
The vet who I had an appointment with today said...
Actually, it isn't. They are my two remaining hens.
I suppose that I could have, but the vet is highly experienced and I trust that she knows what she's doing.
Despite being heavily treated with vet-prescribed antibiotics for over two weeks now, this hen still has an aggressive infection in her leg and the infection has not visibly weakened. She will be euthanised once the circulation to her foot is lost.
Unfortunately, this hen will soon need to be euthanised. She has stopped eating in the evenings and has continued to lose weight. Today, I took her to see the vet. The vet performed a thorough investigation on this hen, and the vet's diagnosis was that the hen has adhesions in her coelom that...
I'm sorry for your loss. It must be especially hard to accept a hen's passing when it is killed by a condition that is usually easy to cure.
Thank you for your kind words.
