Get a bag of treats, shake them vigorously within view of the birdies, then scoop out a small amount and place on ramp (or other semi-clean spot inside the coop, so they can see it when entering.
They will learn to RUN to the coop every time you shake the bag. It works for me every time! Of...
A nice side benefit of having too many eggs for my wife and I to eat...we call up friends and family asking if they would like some really great tasting, fresh eggs! So we're socializing a lot more now....thanks to those little oval gifts our hens deliver every day!
I agree! Chickens are so much fun to watch, they are receptive to our affection (most of them hehe) and they deliver breakfast like clockwork! Congrats on your first egg!
Congratulations! The first egg makes everything you do caring for your hens worth it (feeding, watering, coop cleaning, and various petting, treat feeding, and sweet talking too!)
Thanks, Yooper Coop! We wish we could have roosters, but Alhambra California doesn't allow them.
We recently had some success with expanding the 'engagement zone' when the barred rock and buff orpingtons interact. The buffs outran the barred rock, and it was getting dark, so all the birds...
Our 4.5 month old golden comet (a.k.a. Red Sex Link) named appropriately "Goldie" laid her first egg this morning! She didn't sing her 'song', though, and she wasn't sitting on it when I found it on the floor of the henhouse. She has two nesting boxes nicely lined with straw...hopefully she'll...
Welcome! I'm a newcomer too! Expecting our first egg any day now! You will enjoy the people in our group! They are very informative and helpful.
Glad you can enjoy having a rooster! I love their song! But we can't have them in Alhambra, Calf. Their song brings the police a knockin' on...
Had a bad experience with our 3 month old Barred Rock pullet named Malibu this weekend. (She's named Malibu because we got her from a nice store called Malibu Feed Bin where they have great chickens for sale)
When we got her, she was one month younger and therefore smaller than the two red sex...
I agree! Our barred rock pullet is VERY smart! She knows how to warm up to us humans...I always think she is plotting something, though. She is never skittish, and always works her way to the front of our flock. Yes, she is bossy. But she let's me pet her whenever I want. Looking forward...
We have a buff orpington pullet who is soooooo affectionate! She loves to be petted. Reminds me of our doggy who passed recently (16 years old... god bless him!)
I'm thinking that many people in the past took the time to breed buff orpingtons together that had docile tendencies. If so, I am...
We have 5 pullets, and one of them is a barred rock. Ever since we got her 5 weeks ago, she makes a unique, two-tone 'beep' sound almost all the time. Very different from our golden comets, which make more 'regular' chicken clucking and squawking sounds. She is about 2.5 months old now.
Is...
