    Older hen laying phantom eggs

Hi all, My sweet, smart 7-year old alpha hen Lady Sybil (Ameraucana) seems to have started laying phantom eggs. She laid her final/lash egg about a month ago, and now she goes into the nest, sits for an hour, then comes out singing the egg song...except there’s no egg. I thank her and she...

Please help me identify what is wrong w/ my hen's skin!

Thsnj Thank you for replying. I have separated her into a cage in the garage away from the other hens for one week, and there was no change. I’m almost positive it’s not feather picking, as the feathers are completely out and the follicles are basically now non-existent. I’ve had...

Please help me identify what is wrong w/ my hen's skin!

Hello, This is Prinny (named after Prince, as she was born the day he died.) She is a Black Australorp. I started noticing some feather loss around her head about six months ago, but it seemed minor so I let it go. Then a couple months ago, I noticed that her crop area was bald as well as both...

My RIR Hen Went Psycho and Attacked Me. Looking for Input.

Hi AndiL76, What a coincidence! The hen about whom I started this thread is also an RIR named Bernadette, and who I call Bernie. (You can see her photo above.) Maybe Bernies have an unusual propensity for mood swings! Anyway, I think my Bernie was traumatized by a combination of factors...

Why won't my Buff Orpington squat?

Well, I figured out today why Boomer isn't squatting for me. She is squatting for Lady Sybil, my alpha EE hen. Apparently to Boomer, I don't rank. At least I know she CAN squat. What's funny is that Sybil squats for me every time she sees me, yet Boomer doesn't recognize my authority. Haha...

Why won't my Buff Orpington squat?

Thank you, Johnn. Yes she is a standard hatchery BO. I didn't realize they were crossed with Leghorns. That explains it! I will try what you suggested. I do often pick her up to hold her when they go in to roost, and she squawks like I'm trying to murder her. It freaks out all the other girls. :)

Why won't my Buff Orpington squat?

My BO pullet is just over 24 weeks and has been laying for more than 2 weeks, but she is showing NO signs of squatting. She's actually kind of feral, which is odd because I understand that this breed is known to be tame (she's my first Buff). I hand raised her from 2 days old, but she just does...

Silver Laced Wyandotte or Black Australorp? ***Alleged Pullet***

Here's Mr. Bantam Australorp Rooster, Gill, four months later. Look at that tail! His new human tells me that he has a harem of 9 full-size hens all to himself and that he's very happy.

6-Week Old Australorp Attempt to Crow

Up until a week ago, we thought he was a she. He didn't make us wait too long to know 100% for sure. He's barely 6 weeks old! How cute is this? He'll have to be re-homed, but I have a friend with a ranch and a whole flock of hens for him to protect. So he'll be happy. Gonna miss this...

Silver Laced Wyandotte or Black Australorp? ***Alleged Pullet***

Well, Gill(y) didn't make us wait to long. He made his first attempt at crowing this morning. It's was freaking adorable.

Review by '' on item 'Golden Sex Link'

My first two hens were Golden Comets. They were killed a month ago by a predator and I'm still mourning them. They were being naughty and had flown the fence into the neighbor's yard, even though they have a whole acre to free-range here. That is where they were killed. So I would also say that...

Guess who just crouched for me to pick her up? The Kraken! I mean Bernie. I win! She's back!

My RIR Hen Went Psycho and Attacked Me. Looking for Input.

She's doing much better, thank you for asking, amandawv! She is still wary of me, and will eat out of my hand about 50% of the time I offer. She won't really let me approach her, but she's not doing that aggressive stance anymore and hasn't pecked at me at all for the last six days. She's still...

Silver Laced Wyandotte or Black Australorp? ***Alleged Pullet***

Here he is tonight, at just under 7 weeks. I'm 100% convinced he's an Australorp male. I'm going to be so sad to have to re-home this guy. I want to keep him so badly. He's an angel.

Definitely molting. The feathers fall off as she walks around and coop is covered in her feathers. Looks just like she did when she last molted. Also, today she suddenly started behaving more normally again. She's more trusting and eating out of my hand again.

My RIR Hen Went Psycho and Attacked Me. Looking for Input.

Update: This hen has started molting. Which is a little odd because she molted about 7 months ago. Could stress cause a premature molt, and could the molt cause the aggression? Is there anything I should do for her besides the usual molt things: e.g. extra protein? Thanks!

Feather Picking by Easter Egger: How to Stop??

Hi everyone, One of my EE girls started feather picking about 6 months ago. For awhile it was just her own back and was limited, so I let it go. Now she's started picking at her "mate", the new alpha hen, another EE. They are inseparable, and I have watched several times now while Sybil (the...
