    Yucky yard

Hello!! We have had our chickens for 7 years now and their yard is so gross!! They have their run and then they have their part of the backyard fenced off for them. Over the years, the ground became compacted (although I often turn it over for them to collect worms) and when it rains, the ground...

How long do I have to add eggs to a laying broody hen?

Ooops!! Also.... wildchick... I had some of these questions as well. My momma hen, a large NHRed, is currently sitting on 7 bantam eggs. On Father's day, she hatched the very first chick hatched naturally under a hen in my little city farm (she was sitting on 2)!! It was soooo exciting!! I've...

How long do I have to add eggs to a laying broody hen?

NHgirl, my eggs always tilt air-sac up when putting water on them, and I just keep adding water until they are about an inch deep. They float fat side up, with the tip touching the bottom of the pan, but never to the top of the water. If it was me and one floated completely, I think I'd toss it...

Comment by 'NHgirl' in article 'Guide to Letting Broody Hens Hatch and Raise Chicks'

This was a HUGE help!! Thank you so much!! My situation is a bit different, though... I am a 4th grade teacher and we currently have 11 duck eggs to hatch in the class room. After talking with my students, they all thought it would be a great idea for an experiment to see if my broody hen would...

Comment by 'NHgirl' in article 'DO'S AND DON'T'S FOR WINTERIZING'

Thank you for this article! As a new chicken mom, it's hard to know exactly what to do. I have a leghorn (Road Runner) who got frostbite on her beautiful comb. It almost looks like a rainbow of red near the head, a white stripe above that, and purple at the end of the comb. So obviously she has...

    Chicken Run & treats

Thank you, Mtngirl35!! This is very helpful!! I have looked up what not to give, but will check again to be sure. Silly question: do you make the oatmeal with water before giving it to them or just empty the packet for them? LOVE the pumpkin idea!! ...and what kind of beans? Thanx so much!!

Hello!! I was wondering what people are putting in their run? Currently, I have just the dirt that was under the run at the beginning. I'm still new to all of this...my 8 babies are only 3 mos old. (It's getting hard to tell them apart as they're growing to all look the same! * I thought of...

    Broody?

Thank you!! That explains it all. In fact, it now makes sense of a cartoon I remember seeing about Foghorn Leghorn had a chicken friend who was a bit crazy about having her own baby chicks.

    Broody?

Thank you. That makes sense. I have been researching the breeds and have seen where it says that some are more broody than others. So what does it mean if they do become broody? How would you know? What do they do? Does it harm them?

    Broody?

I understand that a hen being "broody" means that she wants to hatch eggs, right? I am new to this... I won't be getting a rooster when I get my chicks, so will I have to be concerned with any of my hens becoming "broody"?
