This thread has wonderful information, presented with gorgeous photos. :love
A month ago I selected two Light Brahmas from the options at TSC, because I had to purchase 4 and 2 were friends for a Polish a friend gave me. I love the feathered legs and have missed them since I lost my last 2...
I'm presently redesigning my coop complex, which is built into an old equipment shed added to the north side of the garage. It grew out of an 8 x 12 coop in the rear of the structure. Outside and in front of the original coop, I added a wall-mounted box, about 2 x 4, that I call the Infirmary. I...
Nice timing!
I requested no meaties and no banties in my Cackle Surprise. I got turkeys! :celebrateThey were delightful and didn't outpace the chicks until they were all out of the brooder. At about 4 months they stopped spending nights in the coop, instead roosting on the garage roof. My new...
My chicks have never done any rearranging on their own and I haven't needed to secure the towels. Whisking them off and on is fast and easy. (I'm not lazy, I swear. I'm efficient.)
Aged kitchen towels tend to get a stearate buildup after a few years of heavy use and begin to smell a bit...
WOWZA!!! :wee
I can't wait for pics of your new cuties! :pop
I always turn on my MHPs when I leave to fetch the carton from the PO, but you aren't leaving, so turn them on whenever you want!
THIS!!! :love
Three years ago, I got a double Cackle Hatchery Surprise Pack. 104 chicks and poults, alive upon arrival. I had constructed a 16" x 6', 3-level brooder and with one MHP in each, it worked very well. The second pic shows the interior of one level. I didn't butt the MHP up against...
Do you have some Pick No More? That colors the blood so it isn't enticing. :thumbsup
And I use Mama Heating Pad...if you have one that doesn't turn off automatically, you can use it. Wrap it in Glad Press'N'Seal, place it over a cooling rack from your kitchen (also wrapped in P'N'S, those...
Ugh. That is never easy or nice. :hugs
Unfortunately, from what I can tell, shipping poultry is risky. I've had orders arrive with all apparently healthy only to have 35% losses over the next few days. It all depends on how far the chicks travel, how smooth the trip is, what time of year it...
The distance and their survival depends on transportation connections and schedules as well as temperatures and handling, which are dependent upon the individuals handling the chicks along the way. I don't have a large data set but it appears that spring survival rates are higher than summer...
I just found a couple of articles that might be relevant...just Googling "Quechua/Incan basket fowl".
The most informative appears to be this one:

These are very interesting-looking birds. I look forward to seeing pics of your wee ones!
My coop has served well for 5 years with normal screens on the windows and 4' poultry wire enclosing the coop (inside a former equipment shed) and hen yard. ;)
Weasels are common here in northern Maine. A few weeks ago, I came literally nose-to-nose with one in the garage, in early afternoon...
@KDOGG331 You're probably closer to transportation than I am by a good ways, so your shipped chicks might have better survival than I did from Cackle. My mail goes to Bangor, then is trucked 3 hours north to my local hub, and then on to my PO. I can get the chicks about 6:30 am, but the long...
When I began on this journey with my fluffybutts, I knew nothing about different breeds. I started off with 3 dozen straight run chicks from TSC, and the split was even! Who could resist a dozen Dixie Chicks? Those Dixie Rainbow roos were RUDE! :barnie They started -- at the tender age of 11...
Thanks for the sympathy, @KDOGG331. I'm either made of pragmatic hearty peasant stock or a heartless old broad, but I do what has to be done, without hesitation. I did bring Peewee inside and tried to bolster her with additional electrolytes but she was dead by morning. Since this thread is for...
