He is a good rooster and not human aggressive like my last rooster. So now I have 1 more thing to love about him. The columbian wyandotte in the 1st pic is the only 1 not laying yet. Shes 39 weeks now. I guess this was for her benefit.
Can anyone tell me why my rooster gets in the nest boxes? He gets in and settles in for a few minutes then gets out. The girls will gather around and talk about it, then he comes out.
All but 1 of the girls have started laying although several are on winter break.
So whats the deal? My old...
Thanks. I did get a Sapphire Olive egger and a calico princess. It makes sense that she shr would be a hybrid since she's such an unusual color. I got a nice variety except that they only sent 7 instead of 10. So my daughter picked out 4 bantams at the store to make up the difference. :)
I'm not worried about breed. I just enjoy the guessing game and I drives me crazy when can't figure 1 out.
She is beautiful though and sweet and a joy to have in my little flock.
I'm beginning to question all of my guesses this time. I thought (excitedly) that this was a Lavender Orpington but now realize they don't have yellow legs and she does.
Any guesses?
I didnt think about araucana or americauna because she doesn't have puffy cheeks or beard but not all of them do. I guess I'll have to wait for an egg. Shouldn't be long now.
My sapphire olive egger and 2 white leghorns started last week. 1st eggs are always exciting.
My current rooster and the 1 across the road talk to each other several times a day.
Now I have a young bantam cockerel that has just started to join in. I'm waiting to see if my HRIC (head rooster in charge) will let me keep him.:fl
I got this pretty girl from Hoovers in a group of rare and standard breeds. I thought she was a Jersey Giant but she has a pea comb. Her feathers have a beautiful green sheen to them. She's not an Australorpe.
What do y'all think?
I can't say for sure what did this but I have a black Australorp that had a similar wound from a raccoon last year. I crated her with her bestie at night in the house until I was able to move and better secure the coop and run. She healed nicely and is 2 yrs. old now but doesn't lay but 2-3 eggs...
You could put a camera on yout nest box for a day or check their pelvic bones to determine who is laying. If the two pointy bones under her tail are about 2 finger width apart, she is laying. If they are almost touching, she isn't yet.
He shouldn't be a problem with any at this age. I'd go ahead and put him where you want him and wait and see how he gets along as he matures.
My aunt has a standard roo and and bantam roo in a small run with 3 hens and they get along fine. It just depends on the birds and their personalities. I...
Just trying to be ahead of things. I have a large RIR (I think) rooster, 2 adult hens, and 10 16 week old babies. 9 pullets and 1 bantam Cochin cockerel. Of the 9 pullets, 1 is a Cochin bantam and 2 are Tiny Dutch bantams.
Is my big rooster going to try to mate with the tinies when they mature...
