Preparing Your Flock & Coop for WINTER

Hi Maureen, I have read alot of people are using food grade DE. I actually ordered some online and use it in the coop to keep away any bugs. I have not had any issues at all. It's safe and easy to use and just use some now & then. I think you might have been the person that mentioned you bought...

Yes I also read that onions are one of the things they shouldn't eat. If you do a search on what not to feed them, it's not a lot of stuff but important. Onions and potatoes are for sure not good.

Preparing Your Flock & Coop for WINTER

Yeah I think it will be ok. Maybe you can mix in the coarse sand with it and even wet it a little bit to keep the dust down while mixing it. I think it's good to replace it after awhile. So when you do replace it just get the other type and it will be fine.I also have the pine shavings in their...

Preparing Your Flock & Coop for WINTER

Well from what I read you need to use sand that is not real fine, like play sand, beach sand. We got ours at Lowes. It's builders sand. All sand has silica in it but this has the least amount. The fine sand can cause respiratory issues. The sand to use is more coarse and and it's washed sand. I...

Preparing Your Flock & Coop for WINTER

We have used sand for awhile and it works great. Never had an issue with any bugs. I dust occasionally with food grade DE. I clean the coop out daily and it has stayed very clean all through the winter. We plan to rake it all out and replace it with fresh sand now that winter is over. Of course...

Would it be safe enough to use one of these seedling mats under the wood shavings to keep my chickens warmer on very cold nights? I would cover it with the trash bags of course then cover with very deep shavings.

Heated water bowls are really quick and easy also. I ordered 21 from Walmart for 14.00 and they are great. They only heat if needed and only enough to keep it from freezing. My chickens always have plenty of fresh water and it easy to dump and refill everyday.

Preparing Your Flock & Coop for WINTER

I bought a big heated water bowl and have it in the run area so don't have to worry about it being spilled in the bedding. They always have plenty of water. We just started putting a heat lamp just outside the door of where they sleep to take the edge off on really freezing nights. here in North...

We have a barred rock & a black australorp and the BA started laying a few weeks ago and she is still laying an egg every other day. There is snow on the ground today and we have had such freezing cold weather here in Post Falls, Id but it doesn't seem to bother her. She is such a good layer.I...

Heated water bowls and extension cords

We are also using extension cord for the water bowl and it's fine. Be sure you get an outdoor heavy duty one. If you can I really think it's just a put it up off the ground that would be even better. I think it's just a safety warning to be aware of. And like others mentioned, buy one that is...

Any one want to join me in waiting for eggs, posting and comparing notes?

I have a barred rock who is 29 weeks and a black australorp same age and she has been laying for a couple weeks now. Although she seemed to take much longer to lay yesterday and I was worried. I searched online and found that when the temps are really cold (which is what we have now in Post...

Thanks so much for your info, I love learning more about chickens. Your right we don't have a rooster just the two chickens. It's good to know that they don't all squat, I never would have known. Yes the black australorp is so sweet. She has let me pet her so much and pick her up, and she just...

Any one want to join me in waiting for eggs, posting and comparing notes?

Hi, I love reading all the posts from everyone. I have a black australorp and a barred rock they are 27 weeks old and we just got our 1st eggs yesterday Nov 3. Finally talked a chicken into laying an egg!!! photos

I have a barred rock and a black australorp that will be 28 weeks on Nov 6 and I just found 4 brown eggs in the nesting box. I usually clean the coop every morning but didn't get out until after lunch today and found the eggs. I don't think they were there yesterday because I would have seen...
