Unsworth,
I live very close to you in Jackson. I do let my chickens free range in the nice weather and then coop them at night. Right now, they're pretty much staying in the run during the day. They don't like the snow. The predators that I've had to be concerned with mostly are coyote, fox...
In case anyone is interested, my husband put her down yesterday and removed the contents of the crop afterwards. It was a huge mass of long either weed type grasses or straw. I can't imagine why she'd eat straw though. It was at least 2 cups worth. I could barely pull it apart outside of...
Unfortunately, this mass is not soft enough that she could vomit anything up. I spent the entire day yesterday, every 15 minutes giving her a 12ml syringe of water and massaging. She's exactly the same this morning. Thanks for the advice everyone.
I tried to post something earlier but I guess it didn't post for some reason.
So, today I was able to get about 120 ml's of water down my girl and massaged all day. Unfortunately, I think there's something in there that isn't going to come out. There are a lot of bigger hard objects that I...
Here's the update. I got home from work last night after 10pm and she was sleeping so I checked on her but didn't mess with her. I got up this morning and immediately did the dose of stool softener and got about 6 to 8 ml's of water into her and then did a good massage of the crop. It...
I'll stop after work and get her some watermelon TwoCrows. No, she hasn't been wormed. I've never seen any signs of worms in any of the 5 of m birds and I routinely add the ACV to their water once a week and sprinkle in some DE with their food when I fill it. I felt her breast bone and the...
I only did the oil thing on that first day. I didn't after I got your info TwoCrows. That's what I've been doing, just dribbling it in the front of her mouth and letting her drink.
Kathy, I've gotten her to drink a little the past couple days. Not a lot but enough that I don't think she's in danger of dehydration yet. I'll keep monitoring the water dish though. Thanks
Her crop this morning isn't as small as I would have hoped. It's definitely not down by half and it seems like it's hardened up a bit from not massaging it through the night. I don't think I should give her any food for now. I'll get the dose of softener in and get some massages going...
I have a feeling my anti-social girl will be a little more social after we get through all this, lol! I've held her more today than I have the whole time I've had her. She's always been so skittish but she does seem like she's starting to like the touching...a little anyway.
Thanks. I think she's a pretty one too! She has one funky toe that I think was broken as a chick but it doesn't seem to bother her. Other than the crop issue going on right now, she seems healthy so hopefully, I can get her through this. I have 2 Barred Rocks and 3 Rhode Island Reds. I...
Ok, I gave her the stool softener at 10:30am and I've massaged her crop a few times since then. She has pooped a little. I haven't seen her drink anything but I'm keeping an eye on the water level. Here's a couple poop pics. Definitely not normal yet but the crop is feeling a tiny bit squishier.
That's exactly what I have here at the house. Her crop is still hard and full this morning. No poop yet and not wanting to drink. I'm going to do the stool softner. I don't have any baby food so I'm just going to have to try and do it without. I'll fill you in later. Thanks again.
Kathy,
I've been keeping food from her. The only reason I mentioned the baby food was because that was in the article that TwoCrows wrote and it was just a bit to mix the dulcolax in. I do know not to give food while she's impacted.
