My plan for growing chickens for the freezer

I appreciate you adding the yearly, incubate, brooding, raising, freezer schedule. We are looking at raising meat birds this year and having visual of the timeframes at each stage helps me plan our setup.

Which chicken cut is most profitable (on a per pound basis)?

This is an interesting topic I would like some more input on. We are planning on raising some broilers and typically the end product is "whole packaged chicken." But if cut up and sold as wings, breast, leg quarters etc. is more marketable, I love to hear about it.

Chicken poo/compost tea in the garden

Chicken poop fertilizer tea should be composted first. Getting good bacteria to break down the chicken litter requires carbon (wood, dry leaves, straw etc.) oxygen some time. A compost bin will generate heat to kill pathogens that may be present and turn the ammonia into nitrates. Eliminating...

Fruit Trees: how much to prune/trim?

There are some basics to keep in mind with pruning fruit trees. Apple and pear trees you want to prune in the dead of winter while they are dormant. Pitted fruits like plums, peach and cherries you want to prune in early spring when the are waking up for the summer. If you do heavy trimming...

    greenhouse performance?

Oftentimes, just keeping the frost from coming down onto your plants makes a big difference. Temperatures into the teens however will kill a lot of plants. I may adapt Crooked C Farms idea and add some insulation to our north face to slow down some of the heat loss at night. Our GH is small...

    Chicken hydroponics

This seems to be a little ventured endeavor. From what I've discovered, composting chicken manure in a liquid state to be used as liquid fertilizer in hydroponics is a tough project. The main problem being that, to compost the chicken manure into nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium while also...

    DIY Hydroponic system?

This is my hydroponic experiment in our little greenhouse. Most of what I have in there I transplanted out of what I had in pots or the ground. But everything seems to be doing well despite getting down to freezing most nights. I have a short cycle timer for the pump running a minute on then 3...

    ATTACK OF THE APHIDS!!!!!

Just a note on the ladybugs, we had an aphid invasion last year and bought ladybugs, released them by the affected plants and our chickens came running up and thanked us for the tasty snack we put out there for them.

    Using Chickens For Fertilizer?

My biggest concern with the Chicken Poop is the Salmonella and the E Coli that can be present in the fresh Poop. Heat, sunlight and time will kill it off for use with plants you intend to eat, especially uncooked. Your straw will help aerate your compost helping oxygen get in for the good...

New way to use chicken manure in hydroponics

We have chickens, and so we also have chicken droppings. We have also started hydroponic gardening. To match the two I have been trying to formulate a liquid composting system to use fresh Chicken poop to compost into liquid fertilizer without drying and then rehydrating again. I am concerned...

    No poop and lethargic.

Is sevin dust ok to put on chickens? We lost another chicken a RIR. She was so weak she couldn’t walk. She was very flaccid. I believe found her too late. Crop was soft she pooped and pee. Poop was brown runny I noted she had a bit of white crusty butt.

I will change out water with corid solution. Crop was soft and empty. Will the DE bath get rid of the louse. Literally the bug was the size of a comma. I decided bysides a dustbath today everyone is getting a drop of oregano oil. Then a yogurt/tofu/oatmeal/mealworm treat. Its a favorite.

    No poop and lethargic.

Our girl is an astrolorp(sp) and was lethargic and sleeping when we came home from work. We brought her in the house fed her some eggs and made her drink some water with minerals. Now, I have not seen any poop but some pee. Her abdomen is feels soft like our other girls. We can’t get her to...

Molting... isn’t normal or is it?

Thank you all. I know that I am very fortunate to have neighbors concerned about our girls. When we have good weather grandparents bring their grandchildren by to see our girls. Of course, Trouble is first to the fence to see if they have any treats. If I am home, I hand the little ones...

Molting... isn’t normal or is it?

We put up plastic shower curtains around our run but they love to freerange. I just find it odd that all 5 of 6 are molting. Just strange.

Molting... isn’t normal or is it?

Last year at this time, I had a very naked chicken fall over and stumbling around my yard. My neighbors were all upset. Needless to say, Lacey spent Thanksgiving on vacation with us. Thank goodness we rented a getaway cabin.

Molting... isn’t normal or is it?

We have six girls and they are different ages. Our oldest is 4 1/2years old (Trouble); the name says it all and she is top hen. The next three (Lacey, Lucy &Lucky) are 2-1/2 and the next two (Betty & Beauty) are one. All are different breeds and all are molting except Trouble. No one has bad...
