Lordy. This has turned into a thing.
Sorry, I was simply abbreviating - was not suggesting the Cocci bacteria. I've only been talking about coccidiois and the Protozoa responsible.
Again, I have maintained this whole time that I ONLY used the Furaltadone/Ronidazole pills (which are for...
But I'm not using amprolium at the moment, I'm using two drugs which have nothing to do with thiamine -
If you need a textbook to believe the science I am relaying to you, check out Veterinary Parasitology by Taylor, Coop, & Wall. Page 322. Lots of info on the use of nitroimidazoles and...
Not sure why you're frustrated, I've given you valid scientific explanations for the medications and choice of continued vitamin support.
Just because it's not something you're familiar with doesn't mean you should discredit or not believe the science behind it.
Again, admittedly my...
Again, Ronidazole is a highly effective antiprotozoal - coccidiosis is caused by coccidial protozoan. So she IS being treated for coccidiosis. The rest of the flock will be treated with Corid. And I always follow with vitamins and probiotics for 2 weeks after any medications are done.
I'm very...
Well, I wouldn't say I'm pumping her full of anything. And while Cocci protozoan do rely on some vitamins to thrive, so do the chickens - so it's also generally advised to continue vitamin support during treatment to assist in recovery.
At least in my experience and how I learned to...
Agreed, Corid is great - but I had to act fast and didn't have any on hand (and I wanted something in pill form as I prefer it when treating one sick bird - you get a measured exact dose). Since she responded so well and quickly to the Furaltadone/Ronidazole combo, I stuck with it, as generally...
Ronidazole is a very effective antiprotozoal, which is what coccidiosis is caused by (coccidian protozoa).
(It also treats canker which is prevalent in pigeons and can also affect chickens, it's caused by a flagellated protozoan - has a little whip tail, and not that I suspected it was an...
Yes, treating her with Furaltadone and Ronidazole, why? I've not heard that before. Hoke gets the meds in the am (pill form) and a diluted solution of vitamins and electrolytes in the evening, about 3cc only because I didn't want to dehydrate her with sodium.
Just wanted to post an update: the little sicky silkie girl ("Hoke") is still hanging in there. I think she is getting stronger, she was standing a bit last night and a bit better at fighting off my unwanted syringe/dropper of a few cc's of vitamin/electrolyte water. Poops look good still, and...
Yeah, like I said - unedereducated veterinarian giving super false information.
If you want to a thorough read on Vitamin A, how Poultry get it (beta caroteinoids), how and where they process it internally, how it's utilized by the body and how excess and deficiencies affect them (not cancer)...
LOL
Tirade wasn't directed at you!! :)
Huge sore spot I have with vets who give out bad information like that!
sorry if it came across directed in any way at you! :D
That doesn't make sense for two reasons.
1.Wouldn't all my birds be suffering? I've been using organic feed for about 25 years and never had a problem.
2. (This rant is directed at the dopey vet who suggested such a thing): I work for a vet hospital, have a background in nutrition...
I have Kaytee Exact and Harrison's High Potency Fine pellets, I can make little balls and offer that to her as well. She's eating well, a combo of organic grower crumbles, Harrison's organic chicken feed, Farmer's Helper Chick's UltraKibble, and the Harrison's organic HP Fine Pellet.
I ordered...
Well, she is still alive - eating and drinking on her own. I check on her every hour and sit with her and hold the little dishes up to her to encourage her, and she drinks and eats a little for me. (And on her own too)
I am continuing the Furaltadone and Ronidazole and have added VetRx (still...
I cut up a towel and made a U shape to support her which she really seemed happy about, and it seems to be giving her some nice support and comfort.
I left the back of the towel "ring" open so she could poop on the paper towels and not have to have it right on her tail.
I've been checking on...
Good point - I will go to Tractor Supply in the am, I believe they have the NutriDrench or I know they have a liquid poultry vitamin for sure, I will start her on that first thing in the morning. I hope she makes it, she is such a nice girl.
I think she wasn't eating because she couldn't walk or stand and get into her food and water cup. But of course, you're right. I will certainly check for worms. As soon as she had access to the shallow food/water dishes in front of her she was chowing down and drinking happily. So I dunno... so...
Yeah I agree. It makes me hopeful.
She's very used to being on her own. Even in the big yard the other chickens totally ignore her, she is always by herself, it's sad and the reason I want to go get the rest of the pullets from her clutch in MA.
(and sometimes the other chickens pick on her or...
Yeah, true - but I handle her daily and she was robust on Friday night (a few of my chickens demand daily lap-time, she is one of them and I was cuddling her a while Friday). Worms and other parasites I've noticed usually take a little while and the birds gradually lose weight - not over 2 or 3...
