I too have been known to trim topknots on my silkies .I only do it when I see one that is having trouble finding their way around. I dont show and although they are so beautiful with full topknots we have lots of hawks and eagles so my first concern has to be for the safety of my flock.

I have raised silkies for over 30 yrs now and never had a problem with fertility due to fluffy butts ...I do beleive you may need more roo's with hens than normal for other breeds but just from observing mine I think it is due to hens run with a certain roo and I see mine is groups of 4-5 hens...
