    I too have been known to trim topknots on my silkies .I only do it when I see one that is having trouble finding their way around. I dont show and although they are so beautiful with full topknots we have lots of hawks and eagles so my first concern has to be for the safety of my flock.

    I have raised silkies for over 30 yrs now and never had a problem with fertility due to fluffy butts ...I do beleive you may need more roo's with hens than normal for other breeds but just from observing mine I think it is due to hens run with a certain roo and I see mine is groups of 4-5 hens...

    I always start my chicks in house then move to rabbiit cages that I cover the floor with a heavy landscape material so nothing can pull them thru wire floor ....then onto chicken pens when large enough to run with flock anyone sell silkie chicks at swaps what kind of price are new chicks...

    so glad to find some other Iowans here .Im between Dubuque and Davenport and Cedar Rapids is where my husband works 1 hr away..my daughter lives near Vinton and also raises chickens I raise Silkies,Duccle's,Rumpless,Old Englisg,Japanese,a few bantam cochins,some mutts,barnacle geese,call ducks...

    Calling all Sebright and Mille Flure experts!!

    I find the duccle a very quite docile breed..One of our mille hens that is just a yr old is so sweet she will jump in my hands when I bend down..I also have some rumpless hens that are that way I have never had sebrights my daughter had some and they were kinda mean with some of the other...
