    Easter Egger club!

So, my son got a birthday present from our Easter Egger, Daisy, today, lol! She is just coming out of a molt and had not laid an egg since mid October. My son swears the green eggs taste best, so it was pretty cool that she laid an egg on his birthday today. :)

    Easter Egger club!

I'm starting to see some of Daisy's feathers on the coop floor and I think I've seen a few outside too. Looks like she is going into an early molt after all (she's around 8 months). I wasnt expecting this until next year, lol.

    The Silver Laced Wyandotte Thread

If it was a hawk there would be a huge pile of feathers. If they had time to eat, there won't be much left to the carcass. If they get scared away, the dead bird may be a good distance away from the feather pile. I have not had personal experience with any other predators but have heard that...

How Many Eggs Did You Get Today?

4/5, all brown eggs. 6th day in a row with no green egg from the Easter Egger.

I suppose my next step should be taking a stool sample in to make sure its not parasites. She's acting normal, jumping, running, perching, and not showing any interest in the egg boxes so pretty sure its not egg binding.

    Easter Egger club!

I feed an organic layer feed. I haven't heard of adding millet, but I do feed sunflower seeds. Now that the fresh sunflower heads I took from the garden are gone, I have been giving shelled sunflower seeds (unsalted) because I wasn't sure if the ones sold for wild birds would be ok or not. I was...

    Easter Egger club!

Thanks chickrookie, I don't see any feathers in the coop or run so I don't think she is molting. No new flock members. My wyandotte does occasionally bully her, I wonder if it could be that. Although one of my aussies usually defends her... hmmm

    Easter Egger club!

Does shortening days affect Easter Egger pullets laying rate more than breeds like australorps and barred rocks? My Easter Egger hasn't layed an egg in 4 days, otherwise acting completely normal. Is it probably just lack of light or should I be worried something else it's going on? She is 31...

1 of 3 chickens killed by hawk... worried about remaining two

I am sorry to hear about your barred rock. One of my barred rocks was just killed two weeks ago by a hawk and I too was not prepared for the heartache after this happened. Mine was 29 weeks, we had one other barred rock and a total of 6 chickens, all the same age at the time. Mine seemed a...

Thanks Faraway40 and ChicagoClucker. That is a good idea Pixie. I have decided I will keep them in their run and the covered veggie garden for the rest of the year but maybe I'll give that a try next year when the leaves are back on the trees again. I had not initially intended on letting them...

So glad to hear she is ok. I was not so lucky 2 weeks ago when a hawk killed one of my barred rocks. I haven't been able to let them out of their run since because 2 large hawks have been coming back every day surveying the yard. I covered the veggie garden with chicken wire today so they could...
