Major attack - is this a bear?

I just installed solar electric fencing and this is exactly what the manufacturer recommends doing. It's to give the predator a good head zap so they will learn to avoid. Makes perfect sense.

Comment by 'Goronson Chicks' in article 'Building a Chicken Coop? Do's, Don'ts and Things to Consider.'

Hi Spiritsmeadow, we are in Maine with similar weather and I couldn't agree more. We ended up making a roof of Suntuff Panels (passive solar) over the whole run which contains all the coops after a few winters of chest-high snow in the run. You can just see the edge of the 20' X 50' run roof in...

At what age do Tom turkeys become aggressive?

Food has stayed the same, he gets free-range pasture time, no obvious illness or injury, appears he's getting old and cranky. It's sad. Wish I could find a way to get him back to 'normal' or find out what's upset him.

At what age do Tom turkeys become aggressive?

Our Blue Slate heritage Tom just turned 5. We've had him since he was about 10 months old. He adopted us. He has always followed us around the yard like a dog. Last week he attacked the farmhand. (Luckily no injuries). This morning he was fine with the farmhand but lunged at me and the sunflower...

    Crested ducks- gender?

I have a group of 6 White Crested, one Golden Hybrid and one Khaki Campbell that I bought as 2 day old chicks on April 17. They are now almost 2 months old. Only one White Crested has a quack. The rest have a rasp. None have the curly tail. Which are they - drake or duck?

Need ORAL dosage of Tylan 50 for Turkey + bantam & std chickens

I read from numerous sources that injecting it into breast muscle would damage the muscle forever. It was recommended to inject it under the skin in back of neck to avoid that. I had been giving it in water in that concentration. But she seemed to hit a plateau.

Comment by 'Goronson Chicks' in article 'Egg Eating, What are the Causes, And How to Prevent It'

You are absolutely correct! We work very hard to keep our birds clean, well fed, pastured and safe from predators. Since we're 'softies' we've used the 'isolate' method the few times we've had an egg eater. Each farmer or chicken keeper has to decide what works for them. We know we're paying...

TXflowers: Thanks so much for posting this! The same thing just happened to me. The incubator had just 5 days left to go with 14 of our rare breed babies in it yesterday and someone unplugged it in the morning and I didn't notice till this morning. Preparing Your Flock & Coop for WINTER

We have 3-year-old Gold-Laced Wyandottes in our flock and they still lay at least every other day, if not every day, all through winter. We also have 3-year-old Polish girls and they are doing the same. (I mention these becasueI've read that they are not good layers, but this has proven to be...
