i ordered 3,000 live meal worms about a month ago, changing the vegies, ( a couple carrot pieces) about twice a week, and putting the pupae (an intermediate phase that turns into a beetle) into a separate container is all the care I have given other than a 2 inch layer of quick oats. my girls...
as for the witching for water, I can honestly say that it has nothing to do with the hand of the whitcher, my cousin Frank is a well driller and I have seen first hand the stick (apple works best) bend in his hand with such a draw that it pealed the bark off the branch, and rawed his hands...
as much as I love our girls and guy ( 15 production reds and a RR Rooster) their purpose in life is to feed my family, when a hawk got one of the girls she went in the freezer. who am I to deprive her of her purpose in life. eggs or legs its all good. ( I do understand the sentiment though, it...
Well about 7 hours ago I set up a heat lamp, and got it to 80 degrees on the wall next to the bins, a few minutes ago I started separating pupae from each of the bins. they definitely weren't there this am! thank you so much!!!!
hi my name is tracy hand in upstate NY I ordered 3000 meal worms but they have become lethargic,is this normal? I don't know what stage they are at, I know some have shed their skin at least once, and I separated 3 pupae, I have them in wheat bran mixed with some lay mash. the temp has been mid...
Do you have ceramic or fake eggs in the nesting boxes? I just thought to ask, I do and still have one laying eggs outside, trying to figure out a way to get her to use one of the 6 nesting boxes (I have 15 hens)
thanks, my real question is how to keep them from laying outside in the run, maybe leave them shut in the coop ( I have a fairly large coop 5x12 for 16 chickens) for a couple days, during the coldest part of the winter here in upstate NY they will have to spend quite a lot of time in there...
please let me know if you get an answer to this question. we had one of our production reds just drop one in the run yesterday, thankfully we were there to pick it up as the whole flock came to see this new thing in the yard! I am looking for ways to ensure they use the 6 nesting boxes we have...
I just started raising meal worms for my chickens, I ordered 3,000 to start, trying different things to learn. here is a video that really helped me. I just found 3 pupae, I have a some worms turning black and a lot of the worms have stopped moving, I think the black ones are dead, hopefully the...
ok i am new to raising chickens, so please forgive my ignorance. I know from experience with the wild animals around here in the Adirondacks that nothing is totally impervious to invasion, but I keep reading of all these predators getting thru chicken wire into coops....I built my hen house from...
sadly we just had to have our dog put to sleep, but at dark the chickens go in the coop, and we close the sliding door. during the day we find most of the predators are not very active, plus we are around most of the time. we just put up deer netting over the top of the run to keep out aerial...
here is our coop and run in upstate NY! (an hour North of Utica)
you can see my slide up door that you can open and close from outside the hen house section with the red handle, it has the 2x4 base plate for the outside wall stops drafts and will keep predators from getting their paws...
these aren't inventions Per say, but here is my chicken ladder complete with poop slide into easy empty pans.
and here is my automatic oyster shell crumble feeder made from an old clay pipe and lid from a 5 gallon bucket.
I put a slanted 'ceiling' on my nesting boxes, those that want to can roost up there at night, I just scrape the droppings off with a small scraper in the am. those that wish too can go into the nesting boxes. I also have a chicken ladder. on the other side of the coop for them to roost on.
our first egg was a double yoker!!!
Look how dark that yoke is!!! it worked out great Wendy and I each got a yolk and some white!! DELICIOUS!
Can't wait for more!!
