Eating meat from a sick chicken

Definitely cull and dispose of far away from your animals. I did something similar and paid the price. Lost my flock and had to start over. I would not waste the $ or time to try and heal. That's what I did and wasn't successful. I would not eat a sick bird either.

    Automatic doors on coop

I have used automatic coop door for 2yrs and love it. I have it set on a timer so that the chickens can get out in the run in the morning. Later on I let them free-range. I make sure they have plenty of food and water at night so that they'll be all set in the morning. If I want to sleep in I...

    auto door openers

I have the automatic door opener that was all framed in. It had the drapery motor inside the frame. The NH weather was so damp this yr that I had to replace the door with a pc of plexiglass as the wood door swelled beyond what they had allowed for swelling, not their problem but New England...

Big question, why did all of you new chicken owners get chickens?

I was told in Jan of 2009 that our company was going to be sold. The first thing I did was pay off my truck and when Agway put up the sign for chicks I bought 15- 5 RIR, 5 white rocks and 5 NHR. I ended up with 13 hens and 2 roos. The eggs started coming in just about the time the company shut...

please read r they ready to lay

They're getting close but may not lay until about 20-24 weeks. Have fun! It's so exciting to get that first egg. I have some that are 18 weeks and am anxious for them to start laying so I can replace some of my older girls that are no longer laying.

I do NOT like cornish x's.....

My first time with Cornish x and I am not pleased with their aggressive attitude. Every time I fill the feed/waterers they bite my hands and fingers and fly towards my face. Lost 3 of them the first week as well. Just keeled over and died. They are only 3 wks old today. I definately will have...

Sparrow Ministries - 01-06-2012 Cleaning room done!

Update: The owners of the property down the road have given me permission to take the 2 coops. Having said that I know He will provide the helpers needed to get them to my home. God's timing is impeccable. Agway has just put up the sign that they are taking chick orders. The funds to purchase...

I could just throw myself on the ground screaming and kicking my feet!

I was considering a one of those heated waterers in the fall. Ended up getting laid off and decided I would muddle thru it. Mother went to town a month later and picked up one of those heated bases. I was going to have her take it back, it was more money than the heated waterer. Cold was...

Sparrow Ministries - 01-06-2012 Cleaning room done!

Last January I was told by the owner of our small company that he was going to sell and retire. I prayed about the situation and ordered 15 chickens from our local Agway. I had been wanting to get some chickens for a few years. My brother-in-law helped me convert my shed so that I had an 8x8...

Roo Attack... Solution on page 4!!

I had two roos, one White Rock and one RIR. The RIR got nasty and had to go. Went after my nephew. Several male friends and family members offered to put him down, but it had to be me. I felt that I needed to do the deed myself as they are my birds. I don't know that I can convey how I felt, it...

Non violent way to kill a chicken

I agree my birds, my job as responsible manager, easily could have given task over to the men that volunteered to do it for me but I knew in my heart that it had to be me. And no side show waited till mother went to her sisters. Did it prayerfully on a Sun b-4 church. It was giving the chicken...
