    Grafting chicks

Hey everybody, So my girlfriend and I hatched 8 eggs 2 and a half weeks ago. We are wondering what to do with them next. We already have 2 coops with adult hens that wouldnt really work. I am going to fix up an old chicken tractor and use that, with a heat lamp. Then my girlfriend starts a...

Comment by 'roseygirl' in article 'How much does it cost to raise backyard chickens?'

If all you want is eggs, then I've found that they will cost quite a bit. Like others have said, there are many other benefits of having chickens that make them worth it, like tilling land, providing compost, parasite control around other livestock, etc. If you put the chickens to work then...

Can respiratory problems run their course?

That is very encouraging, thank you. I will hold off on killing all my chickens

Can respiratory problems run their course?

Interesting that the new birds did not contract, or if they did, we're never symptomatic. A few of my new birds just yawned a lot for a few days, and others have been completely asymptomatic after being with the birds who were once sick for a month and a half. 2 of the new birds just came down...

Can respiratory problems run their course?

Update: my local farm vet can do a blood test on my chickens! I will see about getting that done next week and let you know what it is. The chickens all looked about the same last night. The austrolorp has swollen eyes and the maran is yawning excessively. I looked at the rirs who were the...

Can respiratory problems run their course?

It is hard to tell who is the sickest because this blows over quickly and none of them get that sick. Definitely symptomatic, but in varying severity from the swollen eyes with discharge for 2 weeks to nothing more than excessive yawning for a couple days. Either way each one seems to return...

Can respiratory problems run their course?

I searched the forum and found that you can, in fact vaccinate from IB. I'm going to try to get my hands on that and seperate and vaccinate all the birds who have not displayed symptoms, while I am waiting to hear back about the maran. Either way, it seems like vaccinating won't hurt...

Can respiratory problems run their course?

Thank you cagirl, I hope they follow the same path your chickens did. My rooster was the original chicken we got, and he has never displayed any symptoms. Some just yawned a lot for a week or two and that was all I ever saw them do. I did want to breed and sell chickens in the local...

Can respiratory problems run their course?

Thank you. I think I will cull the maran and send her in for testing. I don't see how it would be possible to sterilize a wooden coop, let alone the soil all over the 2.5 acres that they free range on. How long do these diseases last in the environment? If it is a long time then it seems...

Can respiratory problems run their course?

That is so great to hear that yours survived so long. Did symptoms reappear quite often? My cuckoo maran is the newest one to get sick. I suppose I could cull her and take her in. It's so hard to do when it doesn't seem that bad in the first place

Can respiratory problems run their course?

I feel like it might be better to isolate the healthy birds in a new coop and hope they have a chance at avoiding catching this

Can respiratory problems run their course?

No watery whites. I just read that ib can run it's course any many people treat with antibiotics for secondary infections. Another thing to note is that this is not spreading fast at all. Over half the birds have still not displayed any symptoms at all.

Can respiratory problems run their course?

Ok so once this reappears due to a stressor, the bird may become sicker than the first time and die? Can these birds possibly live for awhile without dying?

Can respiratory problems run their course?

Thank you so much. None have died in the 2 and a half months that this started, and the first ones that got sick just got over it, are fine now and laying great. It just seems to be going around and not terribly bad. I switched them to medicated starter/grower since they are sick and more...

Can respiratory problems run their course?

Hi, I purchased some pullets back in July. The next day we got them we noticed rattling breathing, excessive yawning, runny eyes. Since then, it has spread to most of the flock, while many seem to have not been affected at all. By mid September, they seemed much much better, and got more...

Any suggestions on cutting back on cost?

An expansive, uncrowded trailer park nearby blows their leaves and creates a HUGE mountain of leaves every year. Lately, they have been running the leaves through a shredder. Last winter I made 40 yards of compost by mixing horse manure with the leaves. When I got chickens, I figured I'd use...

    Breed?

And I don't think this guy was a breeder. He was a pot farmer who got a couple hundred 'straight run' chicks for entertainment but mostly to eat bugs, as he lived in the middle of an orchard
