Found a "vetericyn plus eye wash" at Petco and applied that this afternoon along with more Neosporin for the wounds on her butt. She seemed to be doing better this afternoon so I think it's all working. R eye still swollen but a little less so and she was more active and vocal today. Thanks all!
Thanks, good ideas. I don't have any antibiotics on hand. No Tractor Supply. I';m in suburbia, Redwood City, CA. Have a Petco near me and the feed store I go to (they have some meds but overpriced, but might have to get the Vetericyn there). Can Vetericyn be sprayed around the eye?
No pics at the moment, I had to leave quickly to come into work. Leaving early to stop and get whatever I need to help treat her. What I have at home now are human first aid treatments (Neosporin/bacitracin gel, Neosporin spray/foam, hydrogen peroxide). No iodine yet.
Background: two nights ago a possum got into my hen enclosure and up into the coop. I have three hens in there, two black laced wyandottes and little bantam. The bantam was grabbed from behind, got a good bite on her tail end and few very light scratches around her R cheek. The other hens were...
I was thinking along these lines originally but couldn't envision how it would work. I have an old small bucket that might work as a quick 'cage' around the chick feeder. This is all so I can leave home in a week or so to visit family. Someone will stop by every couple days to check the birds...
I'm mixing my flock together this week, 2 six year old Wyandottes with 2 eight week old bantams. The bantams are on starter/grower crumbles, which the hens apparently find irresistable. I need a way to give them both food in the coop without having to worry that the hens are going to steal all...
This is the most useful info I've found so far with regard to managing an infected flock: http://www.gapoultrylab.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/Mycoplasma%20handout%20for%20Backyard%20Flocks%204-12.pdf
My one (possibly) infected bird showed very mild symptoms for only about 24 hours. She never...
Has no one here really ever been in the same situation?
I'm getting two different vibes with regard to MG. That its a deadly disease that needs to be kept out of the flock entirely, especially with large flocks (my flock is two chickens currently, with two more in the garage). Or that its a...
Also, it sounds to me like MG is pretty common in home flocks. So I have to assume they got exposed early on and have been living with it for some time. This may even be what killed the other 2 hens we started with (both died inexplicably with no symptoms). I also have to assume the if I remove...
ACV is just for general health benefit, makes me feel like I'm doing something immediate ; ) And yes, I'm aware it's not a preventative for MG (MG once contracted is permanent). They drink from plastic and glass waterers. Suffice it to say, I have all the basic details of MG (and ACV and...
Thanks for the links. I've found more or less the same info in a few other places as well. The sick hen seems fully recovered this morning. This is typical of any other occasions I've seen them sneezing or with runny beaks. It's gone in about 24 hours. We hag out near them, let them out around...
I have two mature (around 6 years old) black laced wyandottes in my backyard coop. And have two young (3 week old) bantams (forget the breed at the moment) in my garage chick enclosure.
I noticed one of the wyandottes sneezing or gulping a lot yesterday (something they have done before) but it...
I was thinking of blocking the box, but I do think they'll just resort to the floor. Still that's better then pooping in the nest box all the time!
I have placed them up in the roost before and did again recently. Right now they seem to just plop back down again after I leave. I think the main...
This is sort of a combination coop design and chicken behavior question.
I have three adult hens (about 1 year old now), one buff wyandotte, two silver lace cochin. They have a small coop with attached and enclosed run, plus a larger fenced open top run off that. The coop is about 2' x 4' x 3'...
Hen to be buried today with full ceremony (for my two young boys benefit). Will not exhume! ;)
On the plus side (I guess) this was my loudest and bossiest hen (and I was one hen over the legal limit!). But now I have two black laced wyandottes and only one buff cochin. My 7 year old is worried...
I'm still not convinced something didn't get in there, but the lack of any signs of violence are very odd to me. I'm also certain a predator would have attacked them all as they would have all been close together in the coop and essentially trapped.
I understand whatBantanFan4Life is saying...
Feathers not mussed up in any way that looked unnatural or normal. No dried saliva etc. We have snakes in CA of course, but highly unlikely I have any coming into in my backyard.
The attached run is fully enclosed, the other area just ads some space for them to roam but keeps them corralled. I...
My backyard set up is a solid wood walled coop, raised off the ground, with a small door to an attached and fully enclosed run. The run has a door that leads to a fenced off area with an open top that I let the chickens use during the day. At night I close the run door but leave the coop door...
In general should you avoid taking the eggs from them while they are in the nest box? Seems like disruption would help prevent broody behavior. But I don't want her to start avoiding the nest box.
