respiratory thing and a MASSIVE eye swelling

Alright, so I poked the swelling with a needle and tried to aspirate fluid. I poked two different places (used two different needles). I wasn't able to extract any fluid using the syringe. Then I tried to work fluid out of the swelling using a cloth. One of the holes bled some and produced some...

    Eye Infection

Pictures would be helpful. Others will suggest tetracycline ointment in her eyes. I haven't used it, but others have had great success with it. I use an ointment for animal eyes that is essentially neosporin. Probably formulated to be less thick and more gentle, but the same ingredients as...

respiratory thing and a MASSIVE eye swelling

I have an update for those of you following this drama. They CRD that the chickens most likely have is (knock on wood) nearly gone. There is minimal sneezing and coughing. However, poor Two Face's swelling has gotten about twice the size as it was the last time I posted, which was when I thought...

respiratory thing and a MASSIVE eye swelling

Thanks for the replies so far! I'll try the Tylan tomorrow if I can get it at the feed and seed. The replies seem to be leaning towards this as a bacteria... can swelling of this kind be seen in viruses or would this be a secondary infection thing? Unfortunately, my dad and I don't live in...

respiratory thing and a MASSIVE eye swelling

Thanks for your replies! Threehorses: definitely a good idea, but my vet does not do chickens. I can call around and see if another vet around here would do that for me and how much it would cost. Really, I'm just riding it out for now, I don't foresee any deaths unless it gets worse. As my...

respiratory thing and a MASSIVE eye swelling

Some of you may remember I've been asking about what to do with a flock that most likely has CRD. They have been sneezy for about 2 weeks now, but they don't seem really sick, except for one poor hen who started with some nasal discharge (which most of them don't have) that has progressed into...

What about eggs from chickens with MG or CRD? If the hen is showing symptoms, can you eat her eggs?

    CRD and new birds

Hello again! I'm back with another question. About three weeks ago I purchased 10 chick Auracanas. They're in the basement in a baby pool. During the last few weeks, my original flock has come down with what I believe is CRD. Their main symptom is sneezing, and one or two has a crusty nose...

bloody poop! missing tailfeathers! itching! update: with poop pictures

Lice. I caught another bird and went over her carefully and pulled back some feathers and caught a wave of them running away. Obviously lice and not mites. Long, light brown buggers with a body longer than the head. I raked out the coop and will be putting DE on the dirt before rebedding and...

bloody poop! missing tailfeathers! itching! update: with poop pictures

Pictures for all! I should note that none of the blood is new... apparently there was no bleeding last night. two autralorps... one with a filled out tail, and one that had a filled out tail but now has... 1 tail feather? I caught one that had tail feather loss and looked her over. Vent was...

bloody poop! missing tailfeathers! itching! update: with poop pictures

I will concede that I probably have mites. I have seen the occasional red mite in the barn. I would use the Ivermec, but I put Wazine in the water last night so I'm going to wait... don't want to overload them. In the meantime I'm going to stop by the pathetic farm store and see if they have...

bloody poop! missing tailfeathers! itching! update: with poop pictures

I have a variety of strange symptoms... I went in to watch the chickens this afternoon after noticing more itching than usual. Everyone seemed fine. Then I went and looked over the roosts (pallets leaning against the walls of the barn). There was two really blood poos! I mean like, blood running...

What The Heck Is That???? UPDATE!!

Having processed birds, I can tell you that there is no place on a chicken where their skin can break that would make their guts fall out. In fact, it is quite a chore to get to their guts. Even if she no muscle on her, her guts would still not fall out. You're probably seeing veins.

I chickened out, couldn't cull her (SEE PG 6)

I am both horrified and impressed! I want details!

What The Heck Is That???? UPDATE!!

I'm still going with breast blister. They can form on the sides, and my chicken had a huge one that took up all of her breast on the left side. But whatever it is, it's most likely falls under the category of Not A Big Deal.

What The Heck Is That???? UPDATE!!

I'm going with breast blister. "Blister-like lesions, called breast blisters, can develop on the keel bone area of the breast. They may be difficult to see under the feather cover but can be detected by blowing the feathers away from the breast to reveal the underlying skin. Maintaining dry...

Did I just make a terrible error?

I have another update. I didn't cull them. I sat in the stall with them for a long time watching and listening to them. Maybe the sound the one is making is not a cough? It's like a goose honk. Like, instead of clucking, it's a honking cluck. Bizarre. Both their eyes and noses are clear. I'm...

Did I just make a terrible error?

Thank you all for responding so far. I have read extensively in the forums, and advice for my symptoms vary from "go to the vet, medicate her, and let her sleep in your house" to "nuke the site from space, it's the only way to be sure". I do appreciate that some of you are raising pets and some...

Did I just make a terrible error?

I have an update... I went and sat with the two pullets for a long time, and one of them is coughing. It's a wet, honking noise. If they both get over whatever this is, should I consider not integrating them with the flock? I'd really hate to cull them if they could make it, but I also don't...
