Wow! Thank you so much for your input! I had read that if the hen was doing the raising there was much less chance for illness. Non medicated it is. Last year was the first year we had a hen go broody ( we did medicated at the time) and she raised this years broody hen. Both moms are super...
Hello fellow chicken keepers,
I'm happy to report one of my young hens is broody and doing a wonderful job of sitting on 12 eggs from my group of 9 hens and one rooster. Two questions.. #1, being these delightful babies will be raised by a hen and not a human (in her own separated run) is it...
Hello all!
I can appreciate your concern with the cold weather. We here in South Eastern BC Canada anticipate -27c to -34c in the next couple of days. Piles of snow too. Pretty, but scary for our flock. Snow cleared, hens and rooster safe and well cared for, I cam across one hen with a clear...
Hello. My update comes with sad news. I had to cull my girl. She made a stellar effort, but sadly, no egg, yellow discharge from the vent, comb white, and unable to stand after three days. She stopped eating all together. She made a final effort to leave the coop and free range only to be...
Yes. I put her in with the other hens again after morning and night of baths and hand feeding, etc...she really looked like she was in jail. She has finally eaten (checked her crop..full) but no egg. She is with the other hens, and baby roo. I gave her hand delivered calcium diluted and by...
Ok. Here's hoping. I gave her her bath. She seemed to fall asleep.. relaxed maybe. After I dried her off, she actually laid down on her side all by herself. Easy to get the lube into her. She refused the tums, so I dissolved it in warm water and soaked some pasta in the solution. She ate 4...
Right on, thanks for this. She seems very uninterested in food or water. Only if I hand feed her. How should I administer the Tums? I have the tablet form on hand. I will be very careful with the lube. Its pretty packed in there. I'm just worried Ill break one of the eggs..... yikes!
Hey BYC friends,
My patient is 4 years old. Has layed very large eggs since joining the flock 2 years ago. I thought she had fly strike, but after separating and examining, no maggots and at least 3 palpable eggs inside. I've been soaking in magnesium twice daily, and encouraging her to eat...
My other hen noticed tonight is now in a clean infirmary. She has lots of fight, but the same swollen bottom and labored breathing and gooey green butt. If there is an indication that this is to spread through the flock, your wisdom is so welcomed.
Thanks for your input and kind words. Yes it was tough. Going forward I will watch with vigilance my other hen with signs, but wonder if its bacterial or viral.... I had a neighbors Sharpe dog take out one hen.. (whole other story) as my flock has been otherwise healthy may there be a species...
The definition of "Lash Egg" comes into clear focus now. Although the lash egg was never expelled. and due to bacteria...maybe. Any suggestions would be very welcome.
Thank you. Its been a tough day. The first photo shows the layers. The second the contents. There seemed to be no formation of a visible yoke.. once the watery contents were exposed, there was a distinct odor of ill health. I was mistaken with my flock health. I have one other hen that just...
Thank you all for your information. Unfortunately when i returned from work to check my patient, she was gone. I felt it necessary to see what the cause was. Once inside the first layer was much like hard cheese. The remaining substance was more like watery ricotta (sorry for the cheese...
Oh...Thank you for this link. The first section of the article, egg peritonitis describes her symptoms to a tee. Oh dear. I will do some more research into draining. It appears this is what she has. She was one of my best layers...
Her feathers are not picked out and it doesn't seem reddened. It seems similar to the photo posted by Eggsessive. The alien green poo and pale comb, is this a sign of infection? I'm still learning all this chicken stuff. Thanks again.
Good morning. Up before my rooster today. I separated my girl from the flock and is now in the chicken infirmary. I managed to get some photos. Sorry they are grainy. Her vent shows no sign of maggots, and appears to be normal. The poo is green. I clean it daily. When I washed her up this...
