I'm pretty sure her bald spots started out as normal molting, and that began early summer, but those spots are still there, and one of them looks angry red.
Do you think the other hens are pecking at her? (She is the bottom of the pecking order, but what I see is the other hens pecking in her...
Do you still need a strongly fortified coop inside the fencing if you use Feathernet? Ideally, I'd like to use a lighter weight chicken tractor inside the fencing so I could move everything myself once every day or two, but I'd like to know if determined predators could still get past the...
So Amberjem, sorry I keep harassing you with questions, but I am most certainly a newbie. :) I see you've got a little chicken condo-type structure that's well protected from weather, but the rest (the run?) looks like it's subject to wind, plus rain if it's blowing that direction. Is it the...
Could I get some advice on coop siding in our PNW climate? I live on San Juan Island. I've seen a couple peeps here from Oak Harbor and Whidbey Island, so we've got to have similar weather issues.
I'm looking at some coop building plans, and many of them have just hardware cloth on 4 sides. I...
Alright. Our house is surrounded on 3 sides by woods. I don't want to put the time and effort (and love) into chickens to have them eaten up. Thanks for the advice everyone!
Since tractors are bottomless, I don't think I could make it as secure as a permanent coop. I'm just grasping at straws here to try to make a tractor work, since I love the idea, but I think it's just not the solution for us.
I read in Chicken Tractor, by Andy Lee, that the frequent relocation of a tractor makes predators wary of attacking the birds inside. I'm wondering if anyone here has had any experience with this, either agreeing or disagreeing with what Andy has to say.
Thank you for the breed suggestions.
To clarify about the fleas, the house we bought came infested with fleas, inside and out. Bleh. I was researching to see if chickens would be bothered by them, but to my surprise, I saw a few articles where people claimed that their flea problem disappeared...
I think the water tank tractor is the solution for us. Thanks! I've been scratching my head trying to figure out what to build for our future hens. The previous owner of our house left a somewhat shabby swingset that we were planning on taking to the dump. Rather than using a water tank, I...
