Hen with swollen foot (no visible injury)

Bantam hen 5-6 years old. It started about a week ago. The looked normal (no injury) but started swelling. (The second foot was a little swollen but went back to normal right after starting penicillin.) I started soaking it in Epsom salt twice a day and keeping it clean but the swelling got...

Positive Stories of Introduction of New Chickens

I have 2, 1 year old silkies (1 hen 1 rooster) and 2, 1 year old EE hens in a pen together. This year I got 28 mixed bantams. When they were about 5 weeks old I divided the pen and put the babies outside. 3 days ago I opened the divider to put them together and there wasnt a single problem. The...

    Cant get temp right

I built an incubator out of a styrofoam box, followed miss Prissy's directions. On one of the short sides I have the light on one side, the fan in the middle and then the thermostat. There is a sealed jar of water at the other end of the bator and a small bowl of water in the middle. I added 4...

TSC incubator or make my own, best chance?

Hi, thank you all for your replies. Our rooster was more of a pet. We actually had him for a few years before we got the hens. The reason we want to hatch the eggs from him is to have some of his babies around not really to replace him. It sounds like Im better off buying one for now. Does...

TSC incubator or make my own, best chance?

I hadn't planned on hatching any eggs this year but about a week ago something got our rooster and now I want to try to hatch some eggs while they are still possibly fertile. (I read that they can still lay fertile eggs for 3-4 weeks after the rooster is gone. I hope thats right.) I can afford...

need some answers asap.. chicken sick ..lookslike an air ballon

Hi, I had a baby cockatiel who ruptured an air sack. The air would leak out and gather under the skin, I dont know if the same thing can happen with chickens but the symptoms sound the same. For the cockatiel I took a small sterile needle and released the air. Make sure not to hit a tiny vein...

Dumping Chickens on Our Property - What to do?

I dont know how good animal control is in your area but you can call them and they should come pick them up. In our area the shelter will put them up for adoption and if they dont get adopted they have a farm that will take some of them. If not they put them to sleep like the cats and dogs.
