My guy actually healed right up after a cleaning with some vetericyn, and separation from the hens. So in his case, it was definitely the girls pecking him.
Agreed, they said they have tried to repair them before with no luck, so they recommended amputation instead. The amputation itself would be $300, the additional $200 is for hospitalization and meds. Either way, that's way too much to leave him without a beak. Thanks for the threads. I will...
Thank you for your suggestions. I agree, and I just got home from the avian vet. I drove over an hour to get there, but they only suggested euthanasia or amputation of the broken part of the beak, which would cost me over $500. :( I couldn't afford that. I wanted to do a few more days or...
He does move it. We looked at it closely after my husband got home from work. I was too scared to mess with it and injure it more if he squirmed while I was trying to look at it. The jaw moves fine, and he attempts to eat. It's the lower beak that is cracked a little bit on both sides at...
My cochin roo has gotten into a fight with my other rooster, and has broken his lower beak. His jaw is straight, but his beak won't close in the front. Does anybody know if this can be fixed? I've contacted my vet, but I haven't got an answer yet. I was hoping to fix it at home if possible...
Glad you may have found the answer. Poor guy! It's so frustrating when even the vets' can't help. I've been there. Hope the vaseline, wrapping and dusting does the trick.
That is odd that you have all cochins and are having this problem. There is a possibility that it's something else, but it does appear to be the same. Hmm... I'd imagine it may stress them a bit to move your rooster, but for the rooster, I'd say the condition of his feet are also causing him...
In my Roo's case, it was the hens pecking at his feet. He was with 4 easter egger hens, who don't have feathery feet and legs. Apparently this is common, and it's best not to mix fancy footed chickens with regular ones because of this issue. Are your hens fancy footed too? Because judging by...
Hi all! My bantam cochin rooster is having an issue with both of his feet. He lives with my sister and her flock b/c of rooster fighting issues. She just sent me this picture of his feet. She has him inside right now. He shares a coop/run with 4 non-feather legged hens. I've read somewhere...
I actually didn't put it down the throat. I dripped it on the side of her beak, and she sucked it up, and I put more drops in when she had her mouth open. I have heard of people tube feeding down the throat. I think there is some threads on here about it. And that would be helpful to know...
So sorry for your loss! It's so hard to lose them. :( I'm glad you got a new hatched baby to help cheer you up. My little one has gotten a lot better. She is acting like a normal chick now. She's eating and drinking on her own, and her balance has improved almost 100%. The boiled egg yolk...
Will do. I boiled and blended 2 of my freshest duck egg yolks with some of the vitamin/electrolyte water. It blended up completely smooth, so I was able to syringe it to her easily. I will continue doing that for now. I will let you know how it affects her. :)
Aww I hope that helps. I think I will use my blender and blend a boiled egg yolk, banana and some vitamin/electrolyte water. That should liquify enough for me to be able to syringe feed it to her. Thanks for the food suggestions. :) If she would just eat and drink on her own, I think she'd...
My chick has gotten a little better as far as balance. But she is extremely sleepy and won't eat on her own. I've only been able to get liquid in her b/c she won't eat any food I offer. Wet, dry, nothing. I put some molasses in her vitamin water and she perked up for a few hours yesterday...
Thanks for the info. I read some articles on Marek's disease and I'm not finding that it commonly affects new chicks.

This article states, " MD commonly affects pullets between 12-24 weeks of age, but can infect broilers as early...
