Do you have any tricks to jump start the egg laying process? Yes, I know nature will truly decide.

When I was building mine it was on here every night trying to get as many ideas as I could, but then I ran out of time. I kind of under estimated how fast chickens grow. I think for slapping it together pretty quick it turned out alright. I knew there would be a learning curve, it seems like I...

This is the height of the nesting boxes, the roost sits at 36". Do you think they are ok, or should I move them down?

I guess I would have never thought about putting a bowl of snow in the coop, do they use it? I have really been thinking about a roost board, I will just have to figure out how to adapt it to what I already have going. As we were talking about cold, got me to think about eggs in the cold. What...

Do you have any tricks to jump start the egg laying process? Yes, I know nature will truly decide.

I don't think they have slept in the boxes, but I may lower them to see if it helps. I was actually thinking about adding wood in front of them because I thought it looked like a small landing spot myself. Glad to know you think that is a good idea as well, I will do it this weekend. I actually...

If you look at the 7th picture, with my BR i believe. You can see part of a box in the picture. They are all along the front of the coop just above the roost. They sit about 3' off the floor of the coop. They are indeed easy for them to get into, and i think just as easy to get out of. When i...

Lol, I had to post a pic of him too. Love how calm and cool he is. This is my other roo, I think he is a splash Cochin. Not really sure, he was the free exotic chick. Although I am not sure how exotic it really is. I am glad to hear you think at least a couple could be close. Hopefully it just...

They look small in the pictures, as I said they are about 20 to 21 weeks.

I am not going to give them any hormones or chemicals that's for sure. I was just wondering about things like light, or fake eggs in the nest.... Stuff like that. Does it mater how high their nesting boxes are? Mine are about the same height as the roosting bar, so I know they can get in them...

I don't right now, but I will run out to the coop in a little bit and take some. Hopefully you can help me try to tell the difference between a couple of them. I am sure you can tell I am new at this whole chicken thing. lol.

I realize these are animals, and nature needs to just take its course. I was just wondering if there was anything I could do to help the process. I currently have 15 hens. 3 - Silver laced Wyandottes, 2 - Salmon Faverolles, 2 - Golden Wyandottes, 3 - Araucana/Ameraucanas, 2 - Partridge Rocks, 2...

What do all of you use on the floor of your coops for the winter? I have been using shavings, but I am thinking about switching to sand. If that is a good idea, how deep of sand do you have? 3",4"??

So here is my idea. Using the upside down T in the picture, made out of 6" pvc pipe. I will wrap it in the heat cable pictured, then cover that with insulation. I will put the horizontal water nipples on the lower cross section. I figure this should hold 6-7 gallons of water as well. Worst case...

In my 8x10 coop how many vents should I have? Right now I just have the windows on each side and some air gaps where the roof and walls meet.

Thank you for all the help, as stated I probably will be checking this thread regularly. I am glad I found it. We found 10 acres just outside St.Paul and built a house last fall. With a million things to do this summer I didn't think a chicken coop would have been one of them. I am glad it was...

    Minnesota!

Yeah, that's way I figured I would ask here. I am going go cover my run 14'x24'x24'x16', and put Polly all the way around the sides. My chickens can go under my coop, so I will put straw bails around it. All my water is outside my coop right now and I would like to keep it that way. I like the...

I have 19. I have a few different breeds. silver and golden laced wyandottes, barred rocks, a silkie, a frizzle, easter eggers, salmon faverolles, and a couple more. O, and a giant splash cochin rooster. I live outside of Hastings and Cottage Grove in Denmark town ship. I have used this forum to...

I figured this would be a great place to ask this because I am from MN. Do any of you use horizontal water nipples in the winter here? If so what does yours look like or what are you using for a heater? This is my first winter with chickens. Sorry if this is not the correct place to ask. Any...
