    essential oils for chickens?

Wow! Really encouraging! Can't speak enough good things about coconut oil and love how you've used it with great results. All of your applications sound encouraging for others to try out the versatility of EO for feather and fur friends. Of course the caveat here is to ALWAYS use a few drops...

    essential oils for chickens?

A good number of EO are used for 4-legged friends, but not much info on use on feathered friends. Here's a general discussion: http://www.optimumchoices.com/animals_essential_oils.htm http://healthypets.mercola.com/sites/healthypets/archive/2012/05/14/dr-shelton-on-pets-essential-oils.aspx...

Sponsored Post Considerations for Keeping a Rooster

How do you house the roos? Any hens in the picture?

That's great! I need to possibly rehome a few year-old tame and gentle Bantam Cochins and Polish - both hens and roos - will appreciate suggestions. Thanks It's a tough decision, since they are very efficient as roos - and tame and gentle in nature. Easy to get attached to these birds.

You're right - most likely will need to sell or rehome the roos.

Very creative and thrifty! Thanks for sharing the idea. Lucky the sandbox came with a lid, too - nice how it serves as the domed roof! Aspen shavings are wonderful, maybe sand would've worked, too.

Thank you for including all the helpful links - makes info gathering and understanding the situation that much easier for an anxious keeper in need of help.

    Possible Vent Gleet

It's lucky how you're able to find good vets to handle the situation. How is she doing now? Were you able to find out what was wrong or did she recoup on her own after that?

Gaggle of Chinese Ostracizing a Roman Tufted - Help!

Yes, they are a mated pair now. He is very protective of her and is no longer gentle toward us. He will hiss and even bite if caught off guard. We've kept the new pair separated from the others, since he has turned to bullying the Chinese gander and chases away the other geese to give his mate...

Gaggle of Chinese Ostracizing a Roman Tufted - Help!

UPDATE to all - mystery of Tufted Roman solved! Turns out he is a gander. Upon arrival of the Toulouse goose around mating season, he has paired up with her. As of the first week of February they are an official pair ... That explains why the poor thing was being attacked and chased out by the...

Gaggle of Chinese Ostracizing a Roman Tufted - Help!

Hmm, need to observe more. Thanks for sharing the behavioral patterns - gives me insight to what might be happening here. (The chickens are yet another thing altogether! Need to start a new thread on them asking for suggestions.) Whew! I'm all worn out thinking about it. Gotta go check up on...

Gaggle of Chinese Ostracizing a Roman Tufted - Help!

Aww, they made peace. Hope the four will share nicely. Was it just in the water or did they take the fight inside the coop? Something similar going on with Juhy and the gang. Yesterday all 6 hung out in the yard. No reconciliatory greetings or welcome for Juhy. Things were fine if Juhy or Tula...

Gaggle of Chinese Ostracizing a Roman Tufted - Help!

The idea of introducing a gander - if at all, is mainly out of concern for Juhy. She was reintroduced with the rest, but not accepted. I was hoping Tula and Juhy would be friends. Already tried keeping Juhy, Tula and Pom together. Pom tries desperately to get back with the Chinese. So, in the...

Gaggle of Chinese Ostracizing a Roman Tufted - Help!

I'll have to get a copy of the book, it's on my wishlist for now. I'd thought the closer they huddle at night, the warmer they stay. Need to work on getting them adequate housing soon! Might have to get a Muscovy, too - at some point in the future. REALLY glad to report that Juhy is doing...

Gaggle of Chinese Ostracizing a Roman Tufted - Help!

Even though Tula has been with us for a short while, we really love her. She is very likely a goose. We've taken Juhy and Tula outdoors 3 days ago. Both she and Juhy share the same swim space, but every time Juhy gets in the water, Tula comes out of the water. She stays away from Juhy for most...

Gaggle of Chinese Ostracizing a Roman Tufted - Help!

Thank you for the pointer, Alyssa! Keeping the eggs pointy end down from now - is this method for storage before hatching or during actual hatching? Dumb question - but to turn the eggs do they need to be rotated 180 degrees every turn? So from pointy side down - to pointy side up - then down...

Gaggle of Chinese Ostracizing a Roman Tufted - Help!

Fake eggs - didn't even know there was such a thing! Had to look it up online - so it stops egg production? Don't they get depressed at the end of the month with no hatchlings? Geese needing space makes a lot of sense, especially with ducks and chickens sharing the space. The gaggle of Chinese...

Gaggle of Chinese Ostracizing a Roman Tufted - Help!

You are absolutely right the eggs are no good after about a week. A couple of the older ones were rotten. Decided to share and eat the rest. Definitely makes sense about low hatch rates from old eggs. So much to learn! Ok, so I've been observing the laying goose for the fast few days. She's...

Gaggle of Chinese Ostracizing a Roman Tufted - Help!

Well, the two of them are getting along just fine. However, after watching the video, we visited the place Tula came from this evening and there was a big dominant bird who charged at us to keep us at bay, while two other slightly smaller birds kept eating at a safe distance. These two were...
