    Silkie thread!

We just were given two adult silkie hens from a friend, and we've never had the breed before. We're kind of stumped about their behavior (we've had many bantam breeds and are pretty experienced with poultry in general). One of them has adapted very well - is active and eating/drinking, and...

On day 20 of first hatching - have several questions

All in all, it was a good learning experience, but also very stressful. We have six healthy little guys, and I shielded my daughter from some of the more painful aspects, but I'm a bit too new to this and tenderhearted for the realities of seeing the weaker ones pass away. I need to be realistic...

On day 20 of first hatching - have several questions

Sadly, I had to cull my last chick. His death was inevitable and I couldn't let him suffer. So, for our first incubation project, we had 6 of 13 successfully hatch and survive. Only two of those were Sebrights, though. We have a broody hen so I'm going to put a few under her. Next time, I'm...

On day 20 of first hatching - have several questions

I don't think he's going to make it. I wrapped him in a damp paper towel and kept him snug in a mug overnight, but I think he may have more than just his cord and the remains of his yolk sac on the outside. I'm not sure. He seems more alert and is chirping, and I dipped his beak in a weak sugar...

On day 20 of first hatching - have several questions

He's in the incubator, sleeping and chirping. When he ruptured, only about 5-6 drops fell out. I can't tell if there was anything else outside his body besides the yolk and his umbilical cord.

On day 20 of first hatching - have several questions

Oh no...he ruptured the little bit of yolk sac! Is there still a chance he will be okay?

On day 20 of first hatching - have several questions

He just hatched on his own! It looks like he has a very small (pea sized) bit of the yolk sack still attached. Can he continue to absorb it outside of his shell? Do I need to do anything?

On day 20 of first hatching - have several questions

The membranes looked good and he looks pretty strong. He just doesn't seem to be motivated to progress past the little boost I gave him. He chirps back to the video, but I still worry.

On day 20 of first hatching - have several questions

The last 24 hours have been stressful. First, I arrived home to a lower humidity level and a chick that had died in the middle of zipping — the membranes were dry. Worse, my little fighter passed away just two hours after I wiped him down with a warm cloth and put him under the light. I cried...

On day 20 of first hatching - have several questions

Thanks, everyone. This little guy has hit me right in the heart. Such a tough little fighter. I didn't want to help him along because I had no idea what I was doing, but when I saw that his membrane was drying out and he couldn't progress, I did 45 minutes of hard research and went to work. I...

Little fighter might need my help

One of our Sebright babies hatched last night after a nearly 36-hour struggle. He's hanging in there - finally standing and holding head up. But he was super sticky at hatching and one wing is glued down. He's also really weak. Can I wipe him with a warm cloth or hold him under a warm trickle...

On day 20 of first hatching - have several questions

My little fighter is still surprising me. He's standing, and holding his head up. Still super sticky and weak. Is it possible to wipe him with warm cloth? I don't have any electrolyte solution, but is there anything I can do to give him a boost?

On day 20 of first hatching - have several questions

I'm still worried about that one. He pipped 24 hours ago, started zipping 18 hours ago, stopped completely for 11 hours, and finally worked out. He looks very "sticky," and his head is tucked nearly under his belly. I haven't seen him open his eyes. He's chirping a lot, and made his way onto his...

This lil guy has made no progress in 10 hours. Still ok?

On day 20 of first hatching - have several questions

Woke up to another hatched chick, but no additional pipping or progress beyond that. Our first hatched chick hasn't fluffed much, but is more stable...is it ok to keep him in the bator for another 12 hours? I worry about not giving him any water for a full 24 hours.

On day 20 of first hatching - have several questions

I'm letting them fluff up first (8-12 hours) before moving them. Should I do this sooner so they don't knock eggs willy nilly?

On day 20 of first hatching - have several questions

When I need to remove the chicks, how can I do this safely without risking "shrink wrapping" the others?

On day 20 of first hatching - have several questions

We have our first chick! Three others have pipped but not zipped. I'm sure by morning we'll have a few more. This is amazing...my daughter cried and has been talking to her baby as it rests.

On day 20 of first hatching - have several questions

My first pip is now at 12 hours and is actively hatching. Two others pipped, so 3 of my 13 are doing something. Day 21 has just started. I'm hoping the first one finishes before my daughter goes to bed in three hours. I don't plan to assist any at all because I don't know what I'm doing and...

On day 20 of first hatching - have several questions

Finally some progress on first pipped egg, 10 hours later. A second has pipped as well. Day 21 officially starts in a few hours. This is completely awesome!
