Last summer I used the water protector and didn't have any scum. This summer I had planned to sell the chickens but life and my wife got in the way, so they're still here. I just finished washing scum from the waterer and once I post this reply I'm going out to put Manna Pro Water Protector in...
I plan to try many of these recipes. I had one of "those kind" of neighbors who called to complain that I had too many chickens per the city folk ordinance so too many eggs is not my problem. Before that however, I had planned to donate all our excess eggs to the "Dare to Care" food bank which...
I just learned that one or more of my chickens is burying eggs in the deep bedding, it's nice to know that they didn't invent this and that there are steps that can be taken. I have comets in my crew too
For sleeping it's better the perch is wide enough to rest on. With a narrow perch they have to hold on and can't sleep as deeply.... the lower perch for jumping up should probably be narrow to discourage sleeping there.
Wow, nice but it seems like work to clean... why not angle the tray under the perch to deflect the poo towards the wall
Instead of ramps why not a small lower perch as a jumping off place so the birds can reach the sleeping perch but any predators can't and any sick or injured birds will be...
I would think that you'd find them laying eggs under the workbench and covering the top in poo. Instead of a ladder/ramp on the outside of my coop the girls have a porch about 9 inches deep it's about 24" off the ground so not much gets into the coop other than the chickens. You layout has you...
There so many more fence options available these days. If we had these back in the day farming would have been so different. Electric nets, plastic fence, fiberglass post, solar fence chargers. I'm going to put electrified 1/2" mesh wire on fiberglass post all around the chicken run that I'm...
As much as possible deny them living space and food. Build up off the ground and use rat baffles, hang feeders as high as your chickens can reach. Seal feed in metal cans and clean up any spills. Add extra lighting and try to keep everything stored up off the ground so there is as few hiding...
My coop is built on stilts... the lowest corner is 18 inches off the ground... I've had rats to jump that high a couple of times but at first hint of a rat I put a koro rodent trap under the coop with some Cheerios on it and a few around it... usually they're dead by morning. Wildlife Control...
A heavy-duty plastic deer fence attached to some hoop frames made of 3/4" pvc pipe make a nice addition to a fenced chicken run and the predators leave it alone. The hawks have come and sat in the trees and looked it over on a number of occasions but thats it
Unfortunately some places are still very backwards when it comes to animal care.
The problem we have is over zealous animal control laws that limit chicken ownership to only 6 birds if you have less than a 1/2 acre lot, a hard size to find even in the outskirts of our sprawling metro area...
It has almost a year and the silly things still stand out in the rain and nobody has gotten sick... maybe standing still keeps the rain on the outside of the feathers kind of like not touching the sides of a tent
This started me thinking... I can't say that I've taught my girls anything since the day they got here and I introduced each of them to the water and food. From that time forward they've been training me. Lesson one, don't wear shorts in the coop if you have varicose veins that could be mistaken...
Chickens need to be free from drafts in the winter. Like wild birds, if they are allowed to experience the coming winter they adjust to the cold naturally and stay warm without your doing anything. My coop has one wall that is all screen and the girls are fine. It's 19 degrees outside but under...
I live in Kentucky and right now the outdoor temperature is 19 degrees Fahrenheit. The entire south wall of my coop is 1/4 inch mesh wire and the girls are just fine. I use a variation on the P.T. Woods open air poultry house... it is deep enough that breezes die out before reaching the back of...
