Easter Eggers-What breeds do YOU prefer to cross your Ameraucanas with?

I bred my black Silkie & got 2 black roosters, twice the size of the silky. We locked up the silky and and put in two Icelander roos, and got 12 multi-color, varied chickens. all colors, and all descriptions. We gave the Icelander roos away, and , now have beautiful chickens; not laying, yet...

BREEDING FOR PRODUCTION...EGGS AND OR MEAT.

Thank you for your response. At 78, I have been away from chickens a long time; except the recent buys in past year. The extra roos went off to a local men's mission, where they will enrich the menu. Regards

BREEDING FOR PRODUCTION...EGGS AND OR MEAT.

Thank you, all. We've decided our exiled 18 month old Silky Roo will be returned to flock. We will keep one of the IcelanderXAmeraucanaX Roos, and, hope he mellows . Our chicken house was built for a 2 room grain/tack room building. It is comparable to the chicken house on our farm, where we...

    Need Good Ol' Chicken Dog

My grandfather culled his English Setters, and they were better for it. He had excellent bird hunting dogs. But, at 78, I've seen many changes, and many people save the entire litter, regardless. We believe in and support neutering projects. All of our "2nd hand dogs are immediately...

BREEDING FOR PRODUCTION...EGGS AND OR MEAT.

Not so concerned with color, as with disposition, and longer laying times. We found the Icelanders aggressive, and very hard to keep contained. Just want something used to northern climates; although, we have lights & heaters for really bad weather. We handle our hens and get eggs out from...

BREEDING FOR PRODUCTION...EGGS AND OR MEAT.

I simply want suggestions for a sturdy, mid-sized breed that has a longer laying pattern, between moulting. And, one that would thrive in Eastern WA. Grand-kids, friends and neighbors all enjoy the colored eggs. Hope to retain some of that. Your "speaking in tongues" reference, eludes me. I...

BREEDING FOR PRODUCTION...EGGS AND OR MEAT.

Just curious! Wanted to dabble with a few chicks for year round eggs in NW. My misc. americaunas crosses lay brown, blue, green & sometimes pink. I bought 2 Icelandic roosters; got my hatching eggs, and gave away roosters. I hatched 12 eggs in 50 yo incubator and got 12 chicks; half and...

    Need Good Ol' Chicken Dog

Years ago, on farm; our cocker spaniel dam & her pup, tolerated chickens. But, when we built pond and got ducks, the pup was in her glory! She would "herd" the ducks back into their yard & pond. We had to teach her not to put them away during the day. Both were AKC american CockerSpaniels...

HE CAME UP ON MY PORCH!!!

Kudos to all large breed dogs! At 4 my grandfather brought me home a German Shepherd, that was rare in North FL. in 1940. I now have my 12th one. They are great pets and natural guard dogs. I have had them that we trained, minimally, and, ones with different degrees of training, even a...

My sis in FL panhandle had to trap and kill 3 Bull Coons before she solved her problem. Something climbed 2 fences and killed my pet rooster. Regards, ShaVirginia

What can 3 week old chicks est other than chick starter feed?

My chicks hatched in incubator in our atrium, and have raised them in large box with light. I just give them chick starter. Shall I just put them in large pen and keep there there till they are big enough to put in chicken house with grown ones?
