The county competition was great! Very one-on-one and the judge was very insightful and helpful. He gave me a lot of advice and recommendations. The state competition though was a completely different animal. I think one of my judges was a big name in avian photography, but I cannot remember for...
He got his leg wrapped up in wire and it lost circulation. A few weeks later we brought him up to OSU to have it removed. Apparently all the students fell in love with him.
Thank you!
Thought I'd add:
The robin, squirrels, and the Irish wolfhound were taken when I was 15 for a 4h project, I'm still really fond of them even if the judges BUTCHERED me in their critiques.
The wyandottes are mine (the pictures were for an online show last year), and so is the three...
Yeah the chance of fires are always on my mind when using a heater, but I think the chance is worth it to keep them warm, because many of my breeds are not cold hardy.
My "coop" is a 10x12 shed, so I can get away with an inexpensive space heater on cinder blocks (It was about 30 bucks). The...
It seems to be like that all over. My best show bird had his comb frostbitten with that first big freeze, and some respiratory thing ran rampant through my coop this spring. They're all okay now but man was it a battle.
I haven't had a problem treating with permethrin in the winter (you never...
For mites my go to is permectrin. You can sometimes find a specific "for chickens" spray at the feed store, but I prefer the concentrated stuff.
Its something like 20mL/gallon, I don't typically use much more than that. Spray the birds, coop, and roosts once now then again in about a week. Make...
I didn't have any trouble getting their feet clean for shows, but they do have the tendency to get dirty if its muddy out, or their pen isn't clean. Most of everything washes out with some dish soap and water; stained feathers may require a little more effort though. There are multiple methods...
Speaking as a current 4her, the best SHOWMANSHIP breed in my opinion would be D'uccles. In my experience:
*They have been very tame and being a bantam, they are easy to control in the ring.
*For showmanship they give you the advantage of "extra" parts- feathered feet, vulture hocks, beards...
He looks like an Icelandic chicken, or possibly a Swedish flower hen. Based off the comb and crest however, I'm going to go with Icelandic. :)
He's very flashy!
That is not a BCM, looks more like an araucana mix- looks like something with black skin- possibly ayam cemani (with the single comb)?
He doesn't look sick in the pics, but I agree that you should quarantine, stress has a nasty habit of bringing out disease in even the healthiest birds.
I'm not sure about that, but the only other thing I can find would be from inbreeding. She is super sweet, but I keep thinking she kinda looks like one of those cymbal-banging monkey toys!
Hello all! Been stalking about for awhile, internet outages from coast to coast!
Has anyone ever encountered this? I picked her up from a breeder a few days ago and noticed her eye color (em, markings?) She is on the younger side and is acting fine, just a bit wary of the new place. Yes it is...
