How do I deter foxes in broad daylight?

Sadly, we do not have a safe place to lock them up during the day. Their coop leads straight out to the backyard. Guns are not an option either. Setting a trap and relocating might be an option, I know laws for capturing and relocating possums are stupid - you can only release them so far from...

How do I deter foxes in broad daylight?

Public Holiday in suburbia Melbourne today, we are having a lazy morning cuppa on the couch and about 9.30am the girls all start, what I initially thought was, "Come look, I've just laid an egg song". As sometimes happens, everyone joined in the song (we have 9 girls and 1 silkie Rooster), and...

    Foxes are Jerks!

It is terrible. Quiet. And my favorite girl was taken too. Shh don't tell the others that they aren't my favorite! Stronger coop and carefully choose our chicken sitters from here on out. Thanks for letting me vent my frustrations. BYC is great for talking to other chicken minded peeps.

    Foxes are Jerks!

Thanks, already starting to build a new coop from proper wood not a pre fab store bought coop. And one coop for everyone, not 3 so it is harder to forget to lock one up for future sitters. Is it terrible that we are already talking about which breeds we would like next? Did ruin the day, still...

    Foxes are Jerks!

Just need to vent. Went on holiday for 8 days and had friends stay and chicken sit and house sit for us. We were in the the middle of outback australia so we're out of range for a few days, 2 days before we could get home we got into range and got a message to call ASAP. My heart sank. Half our...

So far we have not had another incident of broken or eaten eggs. Hopefully it was an isolated incident

Someone is eating my eggs, pecking them and eating raw egg

Put grit out this morning and hid some treats around the yard for while we were at work. I got home well after everyone was in bed but hubby said he got 2 good eggs (neither were Rosie's) and no evidence of broken or eaten eggs. Hope he is right. Always put plenty of bedding out. The girls...

Someone is eating my eggs, pecking them and eating raw egg

Thanks. The feed is 18% protein but we recently dropped the pellets from the mix as we thought they weren't eating it. Last winter I used to be good and make them scrambled eggs about once a week. I will get back to feeding a variety of treats and get to the farm shop this weekend and get some...

Someone is eating my eggs, pecking them and eating raw egg

The past 2 days we have got home from work and found 3 eggs over the 2 days, pecked and eaten or rements of a shell in the nest boxes. I think it was the weekend gone I thought one of the girls had laid a no shell egg but now I'm thinking it had been eaten! We have 9 girls that have been...

    chickens can growl?

A couple of our girls got nicknamed "Roar-y" because they roared like the earlier described brawwwl, when we checked on them being broody. When we first got them home and in the quarantine area, they were almost purring as they settled their bedding down. It was very peculiar and I had not come...

    Show off your roosters

our new rescue Terry-terrible-trouble-roo. He has been hand raised and is very friendly but apparently didn't like the hair dryer as he climbed all the way up my arm and onto my shoulder. I have found silkie roos to be a bit stupid. It absolutely bucketed down today and he just wouldn't get...
