Canning! I have grapes, pears, apples, cucumbers, tomatoes, and peppers sitting on my counter waiting to be processed. I love canning and do way more than the average person, but yeah. A bit overwhelmed at the moment . . . First up is salsa. Then bread and butter pickles. Then grape jelly...
Discovered that one of my broody hens has mites when I checked the eggs under her. What is the best way to treat all of the birds and the coop? I am planning on completely cleaning out the coop, treating the coop and the birds, and then replacing the bedding. Hopefully before the middle of...
I think so! A few days ago I got 45 eggs out of 50-something chickens (including six roosters). Nearly every hen we have laid that day. First time that has EVER happened. Normally we get a little over two dozen per day. Sometimes a little less, sometimes a little more.
Wow, great first post Bogtown Chick! I haven't been on here in a long time!
Maybe some of you remember the chick that was born on our hobby farm last Fall? It was solid black with a white spot on the back of its head. I wrote it off as a male, everyone thought it was a male, turns out...
I moved the crabby broody to the coop. She had six eggs under her and one chick. The chick is black with a white spot on the back of its head. Came out of a brown egg (the Wellie has apparently been sitting on other eggs because there were also blue and green eggs under her). The only...
Hi everyone! Busy summer of gardening, canning, and working on some outdoor projects. Our run still isn't finished, but not a big deal because we free range.
So I have two pullets sitting on eggs in our shed. A Wellie and an Australorp. We have 50 chickens and don't need the eggs so I let...
I posted some pics of the Aronia plant a few pages back. I would say it gets at least six feet tall, shrub-like, and a great producer. The berries are bitter, but supposedly high in nutrients.
So today I made Aronia (Black Chokeberry) Jelly. You need about 4000 berries to produce 5 cups of...
Yesterday I processed 19 jars of salsa and 8 jars of apple butter. That was a lot of work. If I can build up the motivation today I will go and pick our Aronia berries and make a jelly with them.
21 pints of applesauce yesterday! I'm out of town until Thursday and I can't stop thinking about what needs to be preserved from the garden, lol. I have apples waiting to be turned into Apple Butter and salsa ingredients . . .
Today I blanched and froze 6 quart bags of green beans. That puts me at 27 now. The next beans I pick are earmarked for Dilly Beans. I've never tried them before and I love to make new things. I also had enough tomatoes left over for 3 quarts of stewed tomatoes. I processed them and they...
I did try the last berries. I'm still alive, lol. It has several small seeds inside. I do think it might be chokeberry (Aronia). TY! I'm so cautious when it comes to fruits/berries that I did not plant myself.
My counter is getting too full! I need to get canning. I've got several...
Alright, can anyone please help me identify these? We live in MN in Zone 4 if that is helpful. We moved here last Fall and have no idea what the previous owners planted here. Seems we are always finding something new!
First up are these miniature apple-type fruit. Extra large crabapple...
Today I picked, picked, and picked! Then I processed 7 pints of stewed tomatoes to make Hotdish. Yesterday I did another batch of grape jelly and even sold a pint of it :)
I think I bought the seeds at Mills Fleet Farm. Either that or Runnings! The beans get even longer than these. I picked all of the mature beans so these are still growing. When I pick to eat I will also measure them just out of curiosity.
Picked another three quarts of green beans today and blanched and froze them! We are up to 21 quarts in the freezer now.
I also picked some Asian beans and served them with dinner. I can't remember their name at the moment, but they are crazy long. Maybe they were called Mile Long Beans...
Sorry about the peach tree! I wish we could grow them here.
Today I put another two quarts of green beans in the freezer and made two more batches of grape jelly. Everyone that stops by here will be taking some home! I've still got grapes on the vine, but I'm done processing them for the...
Netflix is easier to manage on your computer. You can search for things you want to watch and then add them to a list or queue (can't remember). My Netflix has been taken over by the kids. My DH gets so mad because all we ever get recommendations for are kid shows (try getting them to use the...
My chickens started laying about a week or so ago! I was so excited to get those first eggs! Now my issue is that they are laying all over. Some lay in the coop, others in the shed, others randomly in the yard, others hide their nests. I've tried locking them in the coop, but they wait to...
