Good to know. My dad wants a rooster, but so far my only experience has been with aggressive ones, I've been attacked three times by three different roosters, got lucky and only one had spurs.....
Where can you get these?
@wilmascluckmom It's been in the 70s here and my chicks are loving it. Not sure EXACTLY how old they are. I think about 4 weeks because I've had them for 3.
Thanks everyone for the advice for my chicks. They are outside in the coop and my cat is not bothering them. My dog thinks they all belong to him, and is constantly checking on them, and strutting proudly around the coop. I doubt he will let any harm come to them. ;-) Weather is beautiful. The...
@azygous So sorry you lost your cat.... I'll try to get the chicks out this week - even if it means locking up my poor cat. ;-) Guess I can tell her what I tell my dog, "When you start laying eggs, you can get special privileges too!"
Ok, thank you @azygous
My adult chicken free-ranges in our 50x100 ft backyard, but at night or when I have to be away (we have a hawk. :-( ) I put them in a 6x4 ft portable coop with an attached hutch. I had another old hen but she passed away last week. I considered putting the chicks in the...
@JJSS89
They're all at about the same development rate and size. I forgot to mention earlier that these are all bantams.
Here's a pic of where I think they're getting crests. First they lost some feathers there, then these grew in... I just thought these were crests, since they all have them...
I've had grown-up chickens off and on for 7 or 8 years now, but never raised chicks. I got five bantam chicks from Tractor Supply, but I wasn't told how old they were. I've had them for about two weeks, and they've developing crests, are scratching around well, and they have been happy with the...
Don't know if this will help... I'm raising chicks for the first time and had A LOT of trouble with pasty butt. I started out just cleaning them off with a wet paper towel, then tried quickly dipping just their bottoms in lukewarm water and cleaning them off, then we decided to try something...
And definitely don't get Dominicks if you're going to have them around small children. I don't have as much experience with them but they are very aggressive most of the time.
I took my Assel hen to a week long cowboy day petting zoo type thing and she never pecked a single child and was great...
I had a mixed breed chicken that was probably mostly Assel and she was not only a daily layer but very gentle. I got 7 rather large eggs a week from her almost EVERY week. She didn't stop laying except for two times. When I first got her, and once when I was in an accident.
Hope I'm not too late...
I used to live in Tupelo, Mississippi and I was told that they were trying to encourage more people to raise backyard hens even inside the city limits. They were posting articles in the paper about backyard chickens and asking people to try it. One catch - no loudly crowing roosters inside the...
My five bantam chicks from Tractor Supply Co.
I bought six, but one passed away last night, despite my efforts to save her. Thankfully, the rest are all happy and healthy.
