Topic of the Week - How long do chickens live?

I got my first batch of five chickens when I was five, from hatching them out in our Kindergarten class. One of those from the original batch, Little Peep, survived through predator attacks, free ranging, winters, you name it. She eventually died when I was in high school at age 11. I've had...

I agree with Violet that, assuming they are about the same age, the first is a pullet and second cockerel.

This looks like a pullet to me, though this picture was posted over a month ago, any more certainty now that she's older?

Have You Ever Taken Your Chicken For A Walk?

The other 12 of mine outside seem to only follow me if I have food...hahah but my Mottled Cochins are just precious. Chickens are fun

Keeping chickens out of my garden.

Your best bet is probably just a standard fence around it. That will help keep other animals out too. It needs posts that the chickens won't be able to slip through and tall enough they won't realize they can jump over it. I can imagine an electric fence is wide enough a chicken could slip...

VERY Swollen 2 day old chick.. Looks like she's filled with fluid??

That's too bad, I wish your chick the best! Try to post a picture if you can, it will help others identify it better. But like ChickensAreSweet posted, it sounds like Omphalitis. It seems like there's not much you can do besides antibiotics. Keep us updated.

Partridge rock - roo or pullet?

I'm casting my vote for pullets, all of them. I'm no expert by judging from pictures though so I'd like to hear what others think.

    Hello from PA!

Welcome to BYC!! I'm new too but I've had a lot of fun learning things about chickens I never knew before (I've had them for 16 years). It's exciting to get a new (plus first) flock. Hope you have a lot of fun raising them!

    Chicken Animation

Hahahah exactly. That'd be 90 minutes of animation. 12 hours of work per 1 minute means 1080 hours. Doable, but not probable! That's why animations have a million people in the credits, you have to split up the work

    Chicken Animation

Thanks guys, I hope to make some more chicken related animations in the future, it sure is a lot of work though. About 12 hours for a 1 minute product hahaha

    Chicken Animation

I couldn't figure out the best section to share this in, but ultimately chose this one. This semester I took an Intro to Flash Animation class and for my final project decided to make a mini movie based on my little chicken, Nugget (not my chicken nugget, which is why punctuation is important!)...

Ended Contest #7 Cutest Baby Fowl - 6th Annual BYC Easter Hatchalong

Hahaha well it was just a low hanging branch. Nugget's the leader of the pack and with most of her wing feathers in she is not shy of adventure. Every morning when I change the water she flies out of the brooder

    Raising Every Breed of Chicken

I did a similar count and got about 18 different breeds in 15 years. For quite awhile we kept them breeding with each other until there was risk of inbreeding so we ended up with a lot of hybrids which I didn't count. Coloring is something to consider as well. I think some have fairly subtle...

    Raising Every Breed of Chicken

Hello, friends! This was just on my mind lately: has anyone accomplished something such as raising every breed of chicken? Of course there are thousands of undocumented breeds but maybe someone who has raised all breeds the APA acknowledges or perhaps someone who has raised at least one of...
