Help me get rid of my nightly visitors!!!!!

I certainly never indicated we were dealing with hundreds of rats. We shot one and trapped one that we were having trouble getting otherwise. No public health hazard. Hundreds of acres of bush/ forest around the hydro field that is loaded with large predators.

Would any of these products work for mites and lice?

I saw that on Amazon and wasn't sure. There was another product on there as well, but when I tried to order it, it couldn't be shipped to my location. Some provinces can probably get it. The new law applies to Ontario. I think I'll try to order some of this to have on hand for next time...

Would any of these products work for mites and lice?

yes, we did the Vaseline as well. It sure took the strut out of his step with dirt and straw sticking to his feet. 😄

Would any of these products work for mites and lice?

It was odd. I wasn't sure I would be able to buy the Ivermectin, but just went into TSC/Peavey and purchased it without any questions. Yet we can't get poultry dust or spray. Go figure. 🤷‍♀️ At the time I had one rooster with scaly leg mites, so only needed a couple of drops, and the...

Would any of these products work for mites and lice?

I live in Ontario where we are no longer allowed to buy what we need without a license- the same license a commercial operator would need to buy a 50 gal. drum. 🙄 Can't buy rat poison either unless it is in disposable, pre-baited traps. I guess we are deemed too dumb to use the right amount...

Comment by 'Miniflock' in article 'Using Sand In Your Chicken Coop'

I've found that the "construction/all purpose" sand we get in bags at the building center is a bit too fine. The construction sand we get in bulk from our neighbour's landscape and construction company is grittier and works much better. We are using it over concrete floors, though.

Help me get rid of my nightly visitors!!!!!

Good to know. I have always been concerned about other animal getting hold of them after they had eaten the poison. We are surrounded by forest, with all sorts of other predators.

New member Intro - Hello I raise quail!

This is really good to know. I also have egg intolerances, both chicken and duck, and have been thinking of raising quail for the cuteness factor. 🙂 This info may be what tips the scale (with my husband) in favour of getting them.

Comment by 'Miniflock' in article 'Using Sand In Your Chicken Coop'

We live in Ontario and have never had an issue using sand on the floor in winter. When it's really cold and we have to add some heat in the coop, the sand tends to retain a bit of heat.

We haven't had any luck with the electronic ones for rats. Killed a few innocent chipmunks with it though.

Help me get rid of my nightly visitors!!!!!

my hubby dumped in a big hydro field down the road. No other homes nearby. Otherwise he would have just killed them after trapping.

Help me get rid of my nightly visitors!!!!!

I wouldn't poison because other animals/chickens could be harmed. We had a rat we couldn't get rid of trying various traps. We finally got a live trap at TSC and it worked like a charm. Just be sure to take the rats at least 2 miles away or they will come right back.

    Gender help

I guess it's safer shopping at TSC up here (Canada) - they don't carry live birds in the store. We have to place an order well ahead of set delivery dates from the hatchery, so it gives time for cooler heads to prevail. 😁

Predator ripped hole in hardware cloth and is making a nest?

Our dog (a maremma) put a rip in the metal hardware cloth on our chicken run, so I'm sure a lot of predators could rip the plastic cloth.

    NC bears?

We have bears, cougars, lynx, coyote, wolves, fox etc. around us (in Ontario) and have only ever had fox, lynx and the neighbour's cat come close to the coop. Nobody has tried to break in yet. Not sure if the scent of the dogs is a deterrent.
