Need advice for single hen / orphaned baby

Update: baby pigeon is 2 weeks old tomorrow, and thriving. Been feeding it Kaytee Exact through a syringe, and it has gone very smoothly. Going to start incorporating small foods like millet in with the food in about 5-7 days. I've had homers for 7 years now, but have never had to raise a...

Need help rearing (feeding) baby doves!

Those look a bit young to be fledgelings, not sure though. With homing pigeons, when they're that age they usually have 4-6 more days in the nest before fledging. Tell tale sign is they have no yellow baby fuzz anywhere but on top of their head. Might be different for doves, but I assume it...

Need advice for single hen / orphaned baby

Well, good news, it was still alive this morning, and actually seemed well. It is bigger than yesterday, and is now making noise. And it has been pooping.

Need advice for single hen / orphaned baby

I was hoping to see that, but did not see evidence of adoption aside from a half full crop from this baby, which I can only assume was from its mom before she got lost. I have some evidence of two other hens that might be having a light lesbian fling, but they haven't set any eggs. With only...

Need advice for single hen / orphaned baby

Hello all. It's been a while. Lots have kept me from doing more with my homers, mainly starting a family of my own. Anyways, about 6 months ago I had an unfortunate loss after loft flying my birds. I only had 10, and 3 of my 4 cock birds did not come home, leaving me with 6 hens and 1 cock...

    Hatching chicks from an affair?

Thanks for the help. I figured that was the case, that it could go either way. It turns out though, that she never laid eggs. I saw them mating, so I thought she'd lay but she did not....

    Hatching chicks from an affair?

I have a pair of birds, and really like the male, the female is ok but not great breeding traits. I don't separate my birds, so who they're paired to is who they are paired to, I don't have much control. This one nice male bird has had an affair with a nice hen of mine for months now, and I...

What happened to Versele-Laga products in the U.S.?

Sent an email and got a response about 10 day ago saying it was available on Chewy. It had been out of stock for quite a long time, but it is back in stock. Just got a 44lb bag.

What happened to Versele-Laga products in the U.S.?

No not yet. I just see US retailers don't have their products anymore, so maybe contacting them directly to see how I can get it shipped here is a wise move. Thanks

What happened to Versele-Laga products in the U.S.?

My pigeons seem to prefer the seaweed grit made by Versele-Laga, imported from Belgium. I mix in normal red git, and they eat it, but they love the seaweed grit for some reason. I can't seem to get it anymore though. Everybody is sold out in the U.S. Just wondering if anybody knows what's...

    Advice for a dying pigeon

He had passed by the time I got home. He looked peaceful in the corner of the loft--just looked like he died laying down. He's in my freezer until spring when the ground thaws I'll bury him. RIP Jojo.

    Advice for a dying pigeon

When I picked him up last week and brought him into the house his weight seemed a bit light. His droppings appeared just a bit watery, but not green. His vent appeared clear. I could not see much in his mouth. I checked for canker and did not see anything that would indicate canker. I...

    Advice for a dying pigeon

Thank you. I considered this, but was concerned handling him would stress him out. If he is still alive when I get home from work I am going to pick him up and get a sense of how stressed he is and decide from there whether to offer water via syringe. I appreciate everybody's input.

    Advice for a dying pigeon

Thank you. That was my thought. If I see any signs of suffering or pain, I will take him to my mom's office for euthanasia.

    Advice for a dying pigeon

Thanks. So you think it was the right decision to leave him be in the loft? My mom offered to euthanize him. He doesn't appear to be suffering or in pain, but I figured if I noticed that I would take her up on the offer. They would put him in an andesitic chamber and knock him out, and then...

    Paired with a feral

This is a good way to introduce disease into your loft. I would do what you're planning, and try to prevent him from leaving. Tough to say. That could work, but pigeons are weird, smart and form complicated pair bonds. Even if he pairs with one of your hens, he could still go after that feral.

    Ate all the grit

As Cavemanrich said, grit is not just for calcium but for digesting food. It should be offered all the time. I mix my redstone grit with oyster shells to supplement for egg laying. It's surprising 4 month old birds are already laying/breeding. Usually it's closer to 7 months. Maybe they...

    Advice for a dying pigeon

I've been lucky so far over my 6 years of keeping homers--I've never had one of my pigeons die inside my loft (only lost birds flying). I keep my loft very clean, and my birds get weekly pro biotics and apple cider vinegar and garlic in their water. They are very healthy. But last week I...

Ideas to mitigate losses loft flying after locking down for winter

Are these birds you had flown/trained on tosses out several miles, or just loft flown birds. I know one racer who lives by me here in Michigan who sold a bird to somebody in Maryland, and 6 years later it flew all the way back to Michigan and into his loft. But this was a race bird, who had...
