I'm interested in hearing advice, too. I also have two small groups of girls. My oldest group is about 10 weeks old (only 4 pullets), and my younger ones are almost 6 weeks old (only 2 chicks). The older girls have been in their coop/run for about a month, but NY younger ones are still inside...
I also have just six girls; we moved them out to their coop when they were 6 weeks. I never locked mine in the coop. Instead, I just brought out treats around 8:30pm to put in the coop. By the third night they were already up in the coop before I got out there with the treats.
So here's my set up- just a repurposed gallon sized tea jug with three horizontal nipples (one on each side, the fourth side is flush with the brooder wall). It's worked out great. That's Rosie, my Buff Orpington. She had to pop her head in the pic....I call her Nosey Rosie for good reason!
Horizontal chicken nipples = the best invention ever! I was having the same issue; constant shavings and poo in their water. We bought the nipples from Amazon, installed them and my 5 week old chicks had it mastered within 15 minutes.
Here's my nipple waterer set up-- just a clean gallon sized container, and my husband screwed three nipples into (1 on each side of the jug, with one side being flush with our brooder crate). So far, so good. PS- that's Rosie, a buff Orpington, saying hello... I call her Nosey Rosie for good reason!
So, I'm loving these chicken nipples (there's a statement I never thought I'd say lol)! I just installed 3 nipples to a gallon size pitcher and put it in with the girls. They were so curious that within 5 minutes they had it figured out. And, the water's still clean!!!!
I just ordered some, too. I'm so anxious to get them and start using them- the dirty/spilled water issue is never ending! I'm hoping my girls will learn quickly as yours did. Mine are almost 6 weeks old, so I'm hoping their not "too old to learn new tricks". Time will tell, I suppose....
I'm wondering the same thing..... I will be putting my chicks in the coop within a week or so and was wondering if I should put food/water in the coop or in the run. I'm a new chicken momma, so hopefully someone with more experience can give some advice....
I have two 6 day old silver laced Wyandottes, they are so sweet. I can't wait to see how lacy their feathers will be. I'll hold out hope with ya that yours is a girl!
Thanks for your help! I have been turning the lamp off a couple hours during the day, but I still haven't taken them outside. It's been fairly windy here the past few days and I wasn't sure how they would do. However the next couple days it's supposed to be in the high 50s, so I suppose they'd...
New chicken momma here, so I greatly appreciate any advice or suggestions!
Here's my current set up- I have 4 5 week old chicks. I currently have them in a large dog crate (in my house)with a heat lamp pointed at one corner. I've been reducing the temp every week, and right now it's about 75...
Cute babies you have there!! I loved the 2week old stage. Mine are almost 5 weeks old now, and I can't believe the difference just a few weeks makes. I'll be putting mine out in the coop/run in a couple more weeks, and I have the same question you do....will my girls find grit in their run, or...
From what I understand, they should be able to go without a heat source once the chicks are fully feathered, around 6-8 weeks. I have kinda spoiled my girls; I have 4 almost 5 week olds in a large dog crate inside the house. I have started turning off their heat source for a couple hours a day...
I'm a fairly new chicken momma, but from what I've read on here you start your brooder at about 95*, then lower it 5* each week. Of course, let your babies tell you if they're comfortable- if they're too hot they'll stay far away from the heat lamp, if they're too cold they'll pile on top of...
