I'd say with nearly complete certainty that at 12 weeks old those are all four female.
The wyandottes would have significant (4-5X what they have) waddle growth and combs and waddles would be deep red colored.
The barred rocks are also most definitely female. Male barred rocks have wider white...
If crests are absolutely necessary yes.. in my area Easter egger pullet chicks (day old) go for less than $4.. cream Legbar pullet day old chicks, more like $15-20+ each! How bad do you want crests?
They would have had to have been a mix. Your best shot at recreating a speckled green egg would be to put a quality welsummer(medium-dark brown speckled eggs) rooster over some Easter eggers(usually green, sometimes blue eggs), if crests are absolutely necessary you can use cream legbar(blue...
Unfortunately both pictured barred rocks are male. White bars wider than black bars are the giveaway. Comb and waddles that red also say boy, while pullets can "flush" pink when excited they don't get quite that red, and the waddle growth is too much for females of that age. The photo you shared...
The tells for your chick that make it very definitely an Easter egger are the muffs (fluffy cheeks), slate legs, wild type down pattern and pea comb. There are a few factors that can result in runty or slow to feather chicks, no way for us to know exactly why, but I agree that it's more in line...
Junebuggena knows the two pullets on the right are Dominique because of their rose combs, and their over all patterning is slightly different from barred rocks. To the tried eye it is quite obvious, and also clear based on the black to white ratio on them that they're both girls.
The black one...
With wild type pattern I'd say you've got a partridge silkie there. Probably an oops on behalf of the breeder, not necessarily a mixed variety, more likely just selected an egg from the wrong group.
I'm wishing the best for your chicks in transit! Share pics once the fluff balls arrive and are settled in! Love your pirate names! I had a Calypso in my last flock. :)
Hope your Sumatras make it safely! What cute littles you've all got there and looks like good work you've done with your coop. Congratulations and welcome back to byc!
Hey Fellow Missourians!
Coming to you to ask if there are any of you in the SWMO area that have the tools for caponizing cockerels. Its a bit of a long story, but i've researched and am confident in my ability to caponize a cockerel who's only way to live is to be done... I've found the kits...
I'm praying not, but if she did in fact have an upper respiratory infection or disease you'll likely see symptoms in more of your birds. Mg and ms (different forms of mycoplasma) are heavily present in backyard flocks and there is a bit of controversy of what to do if you suspect that's what...
Wheezing... Does her breathing sound rattled if you put your ear to her? Any bubbles from around her eyes? Respiratory infections/diseases are much, much more common than egg bound-ness. Some scientists & veterinarians say it's found in 80-90% of backyard flocks. I have experience treating and...
I'm finally caught up, just discovered this thread a few days ago and I'll be following along now. Love what you're doing with this project and the end results sound like something I'd have dreamed up myself. I've taken an interest in genetics a while back and have been reading and Re reading...
Squabbling at roost time is normal behavior for even the most peaceful flocks. If they have the option to roost separately and are still roosting together, they're fine. Some aspects of chicken behavior are not pretty to us (pecking order) but are completely natural for them, this is one. If...
I'm glad you knew them well, that makes it highly unlikely that you were intentionally misled about the gender of the bird. Still doesn't rule out the chance of the little one being a male. Once the gender is confirmed, I've got some advise for training her (fingers crossed) to quit the pecking...
No, they definitely aren't something feed stores typically carry but a feed store near my old place had an agreement with the hatchery they bought from to take anything "fancy" that the hatchery had surplus of that week. Could be a situation like that. I can't think of any other white birds that...
English (non feathered leg) White marans? Seems highly unlikely... I'm stumped. That's a good looking egg. If you can find out what hatchery your rural king ordered from, and check out their website you'll get an idea of which white breeds they sell. That'll help.
Edited to ad, Meyer hatchery...
